The recent trials and tribulations of a 24h/c player :( :(

After a good start to the season the last two months have seen some pretty awful golf were I didn’t have a clue where the ball was going, but I have kept in there trying to make minor changes to try and find the solution.
The weekend before last I was in Devon for 4 days in our society’s summer tournament and finally I started to play something resembling golf
So a Tuesday night round on my own and a change in tactics. I have decided not to hit anything higher than a 4i and I’m not going to hit two balls of the tee or take two chip shots into the green, :( I’m going to play it like a normal stableford game. Well 18 holes later I walk of the final green (with an up & down) with 40 points, on our SI 1 10th hole where some guys were walking around with some guns (shooting rabbits) must say I didn’t feel right as I knocked my first drive just OOB and the second one in some trees that I had to hack my way out off.

4i off the tee? What a good idea, I can hit this 200+/- which sets me up beautifully to play each of the holes I used the 4i on. My slower swing didn’t see any noticeable differences in my distances with my other irons. As for my putting, I am a reasonable putter but over the last 8 months I think I have over complicated things in trying to see things that probably aren’t there, so it was a return to my old, quick look and bang it mode, resulting in my best putting statistic in 12 months. :D :D

I know it’s only one round but I feel that I have turned the corner, and can again go out there with some kind of confidence. :D :D :D :D

Good play mate,Always say that keeping the ball in play/course managment are really important to good scoring, the big stick ,if not hit well, can put you in so much trouble,so good for you leaving it out,I,myself tend to hit Irons off most tees, only use the driver on a couple of holes, seem to score better that way, good luck in the future!!!

Well played Fred, it's a nice feeling when it all comes good.

Rob - can you please,please,please, start putting a space,after your commas,thanks :D

Amazing how much easier life can be when taking a more reliable club off the tee. This weekend just gone I tried a few different approaches on some holes as I'm still sussing the course and like you, saw good results. The best was on our 15th. Not an overly hard hole but one I'd not parred before. I decided to go with my hybrid off the tee to lay up in front of a fairway bunker which normally catches me. Took the hybrid again to attack the green and came up just short but had a nice chip and a putt which gave me that elusive par. Just need to remember to do it when it matters and not get drawn in by the big stick!! :D

Interesting way of doing things Fred. I can see how not getting penalty shots for OOB and not trying to hack your way out of the clag would certainly help knock a few shots off the score. If youre happy using say 4i and another 4i off the fairway to get up to the green then go for it. Most higher h/cs wouldnt entertain trying to leave a long iron approach and are happy trying to smash it as close as possible to leave lower irons in. This in itself is probably what costs a lot of people the chance to score consistently.

fred has just learned the lesson than none of alot of us dont want to learn. 250 yards in the cabbage is a card wrecker, 200 yards on the short stuff wins hands down

Im playing a tight course saturday and im tempted to leave the big dog at home to see how the card looks. There are some holes i could gain on, but a wild day could see me badly punished.

I did the same thing a few weeks back, played alot better but to the extent that you managed. I will continue with it and use the big dog sparingly. I was using just the hybrid and 5i off the tee, on our 4th par 5 I hit two of the best 5i shots leaving me in pw distance of the green. I did however fluff the first pitch and walked off with bogey which I would of been happy with apart from missing the par chance. It's a hole where I normally card a 7.
