As title says i'm looking to buy a tablet for the wifes xmas(tried to get the arsenic, poisioned ones but cant get them anywhere ;) ) She kind of hinted at an ipad but have no idea what they are like. She uses a kindle and was thinking about getting the kindle fire hdx.Her sister lives in swindon and says they can speak to each other with video calls on ipad but i need some advice before spendng a couple of hundred quid on something she might not like??? Advice appreciated please guys.Funny or educated

Thats the confusing part.Samsung ones look good and the have loads of stuff on the play store and you can put other stuff on it as well(like music)With apple you are confined to what they have to offer and can only download music through itunes.

I've got ipad & would definitely recommend one. Their are cheaper options like the Samsung version that get good reviews.

You can put your CDs onto ipad, you just have to load them onto your iTunes. It's really easy (I'm useless with computers & can manage it)

iPad or iPad. Best Hardware, best software. And they just work. There are other tablets, but none that are as efficient or as easy to use, IMO. If you do go for one, then ipad 2, (I'm writing this on one) is the older and therefore cheaper one, the new ones are ipad mini and ipad air. Between those is personal preference. The mini is kind of half way between a smart phone and a tablet.

+1 for the iPad. So intuitive to use.

My four year old uses one and so does my 65 year old Mum! Really easy to get to grips with and well worth the money IMO.

Your wife can use the "FaceTime" app on an iPad to video call her sister in Swindon or any other person she knows with an apple device. And yes there's an extensive ebook store on the iPad. It's the best option really, iPads are so easy to use.

Its all about what you want to do with it.

I have an ipad, Im an apple-man anyway, but for what I use it for it ticks all the boxes.

Plus, as a piece of engineering, it is beautiful as are all apple products.

The Samsung ones come well rated, I know someone who bought the Tesco one for £130 or something and swears by it.

The other attraction of the ipad for me, is that when I upgrade it, I can probably still draw £200 for it secondhand.

Essentially If you buy an Ipad you are tied into Apple
If you buy a Kindle Fire you are tied into Amazon
and if you buy a Hudl or other Android device, you are tied into Google

There are good products available on all platforms, your choice might be swayed as to which company is perceived as least bad

Excellent point.

Does this work with any ipad? Does it cost for facetime? Is the app store on apple similar to android? some free same cost? Thanks to all for replying. My mind is as clear as mud still ;)

Lots of free apps available. FaceTime is free to use through your Wi Fi.
Tbh mate all the tablets mentioned will be good & do what your wife needs them to.
Should be lots of reviews online.
Personally I'd go with ipad, but like I said depends on what you want to pay.

if she has said she wants an ipad, and you get her a hudl, expect her to spit in your coffee.

Its like you asking for a new taylormade driver and getting a dunlop, she replys with, "well they are both drivers arent they, and the dunlop was cheaper" would you be happy?!

The ipad will do everything she wants and more, plus they now have the WGT (golf game) on ipad and its awesome!! I went round pebble beach -2 last night!!
