I'm now the owner of the new Titleist 714 AP2 irons and I have to say these clubs are as good as I had hoped they would be.
When I took the game up 2.5 years ago I started with the 710 AP2's and the 714's are definitely an improvement. I've always been very sceptical when manufacturers bring out new irons and claim to have improved them over their last set but these really are better. Maybe a four year gap is enough time to have real improvements in equipment.
They've strengthened the lofts a tad but they also have a higher launch with the shorter irons so the ball travels further and it will drop and stop instead of rolling out too much. A problem in other iron sets that have the lofts strengthened.
I didn't buy the irons because Titleist claimed greater distance with them, I bought them simply because I like Titleist products (A Titleist whore if you like) and I wanted some new irons, who doesn't? But these really are an improvement. And whilst hitting the ball a good distance has never been an issue for me, who doesn't want to hit it further as long as you still have great control?
I can't yet comment on the extra forgiveness claim as the 50 balls I hit on the range were off the centre of the clubs (I could see the marks the balls were leaving) but I wouldn't be surprised if again they were an improvement on the 710's.
So there you have it, I'm sure many won't care and I wouldn't blame you but for what my opinion is worth (and that isn't much I know) I would recommend having a hit of these for those looking for some new irons and to see what you think.
