I am in the process of trying to purchase a new putter and have noticed the majority of putters that were in use in the US open had what looked like had urethane inserts on the face ,should I only consider buying one with an insert?
I am a senior and play off 19 handicap, and looking at the price of these if I buy one I want to purchase a good one. Help
Been offered a odyssey white ice no 7 putter very good condition for £65 but doesn't have a insert one like Luke Donald uses

Putters are completely individual, surely you should try a few, maybe get a fitting, have a putting lesson and find out what works for you, and which one you like. Row your own boat on this.

some people like inserts, some dont. its a feel thing and very personal. if you read the marketing claims, insert face putters may get the ball rolling more true etc.. i personally like the insert and my putter has one. but each to their own. as a side, the #7 is a great putter IMHO!

The Urethrane inserts tend to be softer and give more 'feel', so tend to be better on fast greens - which are what the Pros play on, especially in US.

There are some that have metal inserts, either softer or harder than the 'normal' face. These tend to be slightly 'ping-ier' than the Urethrane ones.

It's really personal preference. I prefer slightly more than medium pingy faces. I don't want to feel as though I need to belt the putter, but some (like the old Ping Ansers) are a bit too fiery for me.

The only way is to try for yourself!

Personally have always found the inserts too springy when you have to hit putts hard and hence they arent great for distance control on slower greens, great on fast greens on the us tour, not so good in bedforshire in february lol (or any otrher month!). Much prefer a milled face which gives better control from distance for me

My personal experience with inset putters is that they give an inconsistant roll.

In some cases, the ball comes off the face like a stabbed rat, other times it bearly managed to peel itself away from the putter face.

I, myself, prefer a milled face to a putter.

As has been said above. The best way to work out what is best for you is to go for a fitting, or at least try a few on putting green before handing over your hard earned

All down to personal preference, maybe try a few in a local golf shop?

The White Ice putters DO have an insert though. I have a White Hot XG #7 which also has an insert. The White Ice insert is a bit firmer than the White Hot.

Confusing :)

I have used inserts but started with a solid face with my Ping Anser 2 and gone full circle to a milled Odyssey. That said that is just my preference. I do like the TM AGSI (?) face and that gives a nice roll and if do ever get another putter (never say never) then that wold be my starting point
