Hi, just bought myself a new set of clubs Wilson X31 as part of a package deal. I know many don`t favour starter packages but it suited my budget better (£199 for the package)and as a 20 plus HC player i don`t think it makes much difference. Anyway took them out for a round today and had a terrible time with the putter. Its a different style to my old one, more of a weighted mallet style as opposed to the thinner blade style i had before. I struggled judging distance and weight with my putts and got quite disheartend and craved my old putter by the end. My question is how long do i persevere before i either adapt to the new putter or throw in the towel and revert back to the thin blade style and buy a new one? The irons only took a few holes to bed in as they are slightly heavier than my cheaper old ones (Mixed Dunlop/Onyx set)and the driver was a dream but the putter showed no improvement.

Did you not keep the original putter you had. I'd get it back in the bag asap or look for a new version of the bladed one asap if you are struggling. Putting is a mental thing at the best of times and if you aren't happy with the putter in your hand it makes the process much more difficult.

My advice would be to go to your pro and see what putters he has and buy the best one your budget and feel of the club allows as it should be the one club that stays in the bag for a long time (unlike me who use to change putters moe often than he posted on here!)

My old clubs including the putter was taken as a part exchange for the new set unfortunately. Part of me thinks that its only the weight of the new putter that has made the difference and that once i get use to it i will be sinking more putts. Does the style of putter require a different putting technique ie/ stance etc with it being a mallet as opposed to a blade? Sorry if thats seems a silly question but being reletively new back on the golfing scene and never having played with mallet style im unsure.

Crikey! I like the look of the set, but not the mallet....yuk!
Go back to the old one or invest in a Karsten Ping for £60 and say goodbye to your woes.
As said before, the driver might be the most expensive, the the putter gets the most use and makes your scores.
Don't stick with the one from a set if it's no good for you.

I actually only paid £175 in the end for the package as i got £25 for my old ones. Not bad if you take into account that i only paid £10 for them in the first place. I really like the package as a whole and think i got value for money apart from the blasted putter!

DMM take the putter to the practise green and spend some time getting used to the different weight and putter style.
give it time and practise.

I'd give it a couple of decent practice sessions and if you don't feel any improvement then bin it and follow RGDave's route of the Karsten Anser - Golfbidder have got one for £57, you get one even cheaper on Ebay

I'd have a look at lots of different makes and models including diferent types of inserts (TM's AGSI v odyssey softer insert for example) and different types. It may be that you find something a lot bettter suited to your eye and which feels great.

Thanks for your advice folks, part of me is stubborn and wants to get intune with the new putter and part of me wants to take the "easy" option and revert back to a style that i am familiar with. Think i am going to try and play a couple of rounds over the next few days and see if there is any improvement. For any new golfers out there i can recommend the Wilson X31 package as a whole but perhaps not the putter! But we will see! The driver is excellent and has certainly given me extra distance and a straighter shot.

I used to play with a blade style putter, but because they are meant to be so easy to use, I fell for the idea of using a mallet when I restarted.

Didn't get on with it at all.

Very quickly gave up on that idea and went back to what felt right, not what I'd read was right for 'most' people.

Coz I was on a tight budget I went for a cheap Anser style copy putter from JJB. ( under £15 ) It's more than good enough for the time being, and proves that if it feels right, you don't have to spend fortunes on a half decent putter.

Not that I wouldn't swap it for one of those new Pings, mind.

If you don't mind the look of the new putter, can't you get some of the stick on weights that garages use to balance wheels? Self adhesive, and available in different sizes. I stuck a couple on my MD putter because it was a bit lighter than my old one. Would be cheaper than buying a new putter.

I got a mallet as part of a package set, first club I changed; too light, rubbish metal, dead as only a dead thing can be.

haven't found anything to equal my Ping Karsten B60

Well what a difference a day makes! Went out today for a quick 9 holes and the putter felt great! Holed a few 6ft putts with ease and didn`t 3 putt once. Hope its not a one off but it really is strange how this game can knock you down and then raise you up in the space of 24 hours!

Can I buy it off you,,,,,,,,,,,,? I had a terrible day on the greens today, couldn't get the round thing up to the hole at all, and 3 putted at least three times. Stick with the new one of another couple of rounds see how it goes. Enjoy.
