Hi guys

I am a new member to this forum, and at the age of 50++ have just become a member of my first golf club.

I have been playing the game on my local courses for about 20 years or so, and thought it was the right time to start to play more often, and to get more enjoyment from this wonderful game. I have spoken to the club and they have advised me that I must put in 3 cards to get my h/c so that I can play in competitions .

I have been reading some posts recently and was surprised about how some of you view your putting statistics. Surely if the ball is not on the putting green it can not be classed as a putt, even if you do use your putter on the fringe. If you take a 9 iron of the tee for a short par 3 it is still regarded as a drive, even though you have left the big boys in the bag?

My other question is, how do you record your GIR. Lets say I played of a h/c of 18, does that mean I can take 2 shots to the green on a par 3, or 3 shots to a par 4. The reason I ask is because I dont hit the ball very far and have trouble reaching greens of 400 yards in two shots, even on a good day.

Welcome to the forum, where in Surrey are you?

As for putting stats, don't record them, just go out and play.

Hi Funky Fred.

You are correct any putt that is taken when not on the putting surface itself is not a putt for the purposes of official stats Even if its the fringe, as this is not part of the putting surface itself.

As regards GIR.Or Green in regulation. It is just this. Essentially 2 putts are alowed for each hole. Therefore a parr3 hole you would need to be on the green with your first shot for GIR, to allow for 2 putts, though if you are lucky it'll only be one putt & then be GIR & Birdie, etc.

So Parr3 you must be on the green in 1
Parr4 you must be on the green in 2 shots or less
Parr5 you must be on the green in 3 shots or less

Fitness is good, flexibility not so good due to a bad back. I'm OK swinging side to side, its the bending down I have to be aware off.

I live in Purley. my father was a member at Leatherhead for about 25 years, but he packed up playing for various reasons about 10 years ago, mined you he was 85 at the time.
Played Leatherhead about 15 months ago, lovely course.

Cernunnos:
Forgive me, perhaps I didn't word my question correctly. I know its one shot to a par 3, two shots to a par 4 etc, but thats for the scratch golfer. My question is? would a 18 h/c golfer who gets a shot a hole be allowed to take two shots to a par 3 and three shots to a par 4 and so on, and still say that he has achieved his GIR.

Ah..! I see what you're getting at. Well as far asI'm concerned stats are stats, no matter how many shots you are alowed on this hole or that. So it wouldn't make a difference. GIR is GIR no matter what your ability.

I'm a high handicapplayer & if I don't hit the green in the standard required shots, then it doesn't get recorded as GIR even if I do have 1 or 2 shots extra allowence on that hole.

Though its an interesting concept you raise. Essentially you are suggesting a Net GIR rather than Standard GIR. Could help higher handicappers to perform better in stableford I suppose thinking of GIR in this way. Not that you could use it in stats records.

I mean its not like you aregoing to allowyourself another shot or two toreach a fairway...

Sorry I can't make tomorrow, being a hard working lad. But thanks for the offer.

Just joined The Kent & Surrey Golf & Country Club at Edenbridge. Its been taken over by new owners who look to be working hard to improve things. Apparently there have been some issues down there, but, obviously before my time and I can only judge as I see.

Welcome funkyfred,

Re the GIR question, essentially what Cernunnos is saying is right however your take on it is a good way of focusing and not beating yourself up for not reaching that 415yd par 4 in 2 cos for some, it just won't be possible.

Play your 'par' as per your handicap and the SSS, that way you should always be around buffer and adjust this par as your handicap comes down (or goes up).

Thats a theory a few of the guys I know play with and I know it helps them enjoy the game more.
