New member and a little advice

Good Morning one and all,

Started playing golf recently ( albeit range at the mo )after borrowing a set of clubs from a freind.
Will be contributing in the forum and more than likely be asking a little advice along the way if thats ok..

Ps: how do you pronounce Titleist, to save my embarresment in the future weeks

I say title...ist and then kind of roll it together. Trick is not to use the word tit....if you start with title (he won the league title in 1976), you can't go wrong.

I went in and asked for Tit - ligh - st (at robin hood in B'ham) didn't do that again!!

Played a 18 hole par 3 course about 7 years ago..thats is really,
got some nice courses close to home though for when/ if I progress

Ive only been playing a year, found the best way to make progress was to play a course. Par 3s can also be very goof for practising your short game and also for when you dont have time for a full round on a 'big' course

couldnt agree more with mike, you should get out on the course. There is no real substitute for playing off the turf. The range is ok but you wont get the right feel for taking divots etc.

Short courses are an ace way to get your game going. Play as much as ya can mate and enjoy it. Keep us posted with ya progeress.

I am in the same boat as you mate (and this is also my first post on here). I have been having lessons now for about 6 months and playing on municiples and going out with my friends who are members of clubs.
I couldnt agree more you have to get out and play! I am hoping join a club in the next month or so!

Go for lessons...NOW, or if not right now, tomorrow or the next day. Do not wait.

I went for a few (to get me started) then challenged myself to learn a decent swing through sheer perseverance. Big mistake.

To my mind, forgetting the intricacies of weight shift, role of the legs, rotation of the torso etc.etc. blah, blah, blah, a good swing is dependent on 3 things.
It's easy to remember ...P P P.

Sadly, when I go to the range, I see so many folk trying to fix themselves without either the knowledge or any meaningful drills to help them practice. I've been there, such a waste of time.

Today, there was a guy wasting every ball and ingraining a horrible collection of habits. When I stopped to grab a coffee, he asked me what I'd been hitting, and showed him my utility. (oohh er, missus)

He expressed his disappointment at not being able to hit the ball well, so I watched him for a while. Without going into the nuts and bolts, I explained to him WHY he was struggling and gave him a 5 minute lesson. Two very, very important changes and within 20 balls he was a different player.....he was pretty chuffed.

my last comment to him was - "look, I'm just an amateur and understand only 1% of a proper pro, not to mention the fact that I don't hit it with the technique I'd like to."

He'll be going for a lesson on Tuesday.....

I FEEL REALLY STRONGLY ABOUT THIS, if I can help a beginner out with some tips, imagine the improvements from good professional lessons.

It the same from me I'm afraid. Get lessons fromthe start and you will be flying and not trying to work out old habits. Most of us on here that have been playing for a while will all have at least one major swing fault that creeps back into their game on a fairly regular basis.

As a relative newbie your swing is blank canvass and your pro will be able to teach you everything that is right. From there leave the range behind and get out onto big proper courses.

You will make a right plonker of yourself but as long as you remember not to hold anyone up and call people through most will be understanding (we've all started somewhere).

Get out there and above all enjoy it
