I was in American Golf in Belfast yesterday looking at drivers as I am thinking of a change, got chatting to one of the guys there and he was telling me that due to brexit anything coming in from the states will be going up 15%, which will make the new M1 a handsome £459. Now I think this is an insane amount of money for a driver and was wondering would anyone consider a driver at that price??

He also said that the double trade in value is due to run on after the new year.

the belfry are going to retail them at £445 and have already filled the diary for the release day fitting. crazy imo!

the cynical side of me would just think that they have learnt that last year the M2 was more popular so raise the price of the M2 to the price of last years M1 almost and then will get the money in

Heard off my pro the other day that the new M1 isn't going to be the most expensive on the shelf! God forbid what the others will be

he's on about the callaway epic. £500 i hear

I paid £279 for my m2 (£179 after trading in my old driver) I thought that was more than I would ever spend on one club. Stupid prices.

Think you best get used to the £400+ for a driver as the major OEMs are going to charge that and more. Madness.

I'll stick to my Wishon driver with its £18 shaft in it that gets me 260-270 yds.

Insane prices that, were will it stop?

I suppose the prices will remain high as long as people keep buying them. If you can afford it, go for it!

The 917 was advertised at £449, prior to launch and brexit was blamed, came out at £379-£399 in shops, wouldn't be surprised if the same happens with the M1.

In the early 2000's and I guess before, golf equipment was always cheaper to buy in the US, even when the exchange was pushing $2 to the pound. It was priced in dollars that we paid for in pounds, no matter what the interest rate. I remember buying some R580's when I was on holiday and Mrs. S waited until we went to buy a Nike driver. I wonder if we are heading back to those days.

Although I wasn't into golf when the original Big Bertha was released I was told it retailed at £500?

I bought one of the original Great Big Berthas back in either 96 or 97. from Boldon gc. Cost me £400. I still have it in the garage.. looks more like a 3 wood than a driver these days. I keep threatening to give it a try on the range, but so far havn't got around to it.

I'm not so sure that tactic will work. I expect the reason the M2 did so well was that it did just about everything the M1 would do for the average handicap golfer, but it was a significant amount cheaper. So if you bump up the price of it it then becomes less of an attractive proposition.

I'm not sure the market will sustain drivers nudging towards 500 notes myself. Most people are waking up to the fact that the difference between drivers is actually very little nowadays down to the restrictions they are under. In reality, how many shots will the average golfer would save a year buying a new 500 quid driver if they have one that they have has been fitted over the last 3 or 4 years? Very few I'd guess. Yes I am sure advertising and the golfers need to buy something new will help sell them, but in a market that is at best stagnant in terms of consumers playing the game, there must come a limit where people say 'how much, sod that I'll stick with what I've got'

You know what to do then people.......refuse to buy these clubs! If they don't sell then the manufacturers will be forced to drop the prices. All you are doing is lining the pockets of people that are already very rich. The highly endorsed tour pros can survive.
