Looking to get a new laptop, predominantly for writing on. So must have Word? Or anything else similar. Want to spend about £350 max. But do not have a clue what I am looking at.

off to PC World to have a quick look but anyone got any ideas as quiet frankly I am blind.

Always get my laptops from ebuyer.com always reliable and had the last upgraded as they didn't have mine in stock (didn't effect delivery time either). As for what to look for i haven't looked for a while but will have a look if i get a chance later.

Just got back from PC World having spent 20 mins in there looking, well lost. Didn't have a clue what I was looking at and if there was anyone in there looking thicker than me, well I didn't see anyone with a pencil sticking outta his nose.
so after twenty mins of windows 8, 8.1, 10.
1 TB, 8 gb, intel, HP, PC and lord knows what other flippin abbreviations I looked at I walked into the rain an thought sod it.
consoled me self with a bottle of Barolo to go with me cheese.

ok some simple questions:

big screen or portability?
any use apart from word and internet?
do you need to store lots of music/photos?

If nothing too strenuous then something like the one below would be fine if you add ms office

also throw in the do you want a laptop or a lap-let (a laptop, that you can detach the screen for a tablet - i know thats not the proper name... but like a windows surface kinda thing)

Portable would be nice, and main function word and Internet. I would use present old laptop to keep photos on. Re music. I think I am the only person in the world with an iPhone with no music on it.

re Ms office. I did have a look in PC World and it would be more than useful, but why do you have to pay a yearly subscription for it ?

also to the layman what's the difference between windows 8,8.1 and 10.

Ow ar. What about anti virus.

Office - its new them charging annually for it, the alternative is to buy a previous version where you just buy the license, theres plenty of them around

Windows - just Microsofts versions, the higher the number the newer. 10 has literally just come out and seems decent in the main (and any laptop you buy will come with a free upgrade to this)

Antivirus - if you have windows 10 then it comes with AV included I believe

HP Pavilion X2 laptop, I had an email come earlier today saying I could buy one of these for £219. In essence it is a laptop, tablet etc etc.

however are they any good. Just seemed a bit to cheap for me to believe. Cheers folks.

Avoid anything from a High Street store. They overburnen their computers with aftermarket software that slows them down and really adds no extra functionality whatsoever.

Check out the refurb section on Dell's website.

This. You get what you pay for. Nova tech stuff is great quality and their customer service is second to none.

Not casting aspersions about their build quality, or their customer service. just wondering how they can look at themselves in a mirror knowing that have sold another useless brick to an unsuspecting customer, who thinks they have bought a bargain. there is a thing called "Fitness For Purpose".

Im a Computer Engineer, a big part of my job is recommending new kit to customers and hand on heart, I couldnt ever recommend a Celeron cpu to anyone.:(

Unfortunately, the majority of laptops come with them if you buy from high street shops also. My Novatech recommendation comes from us using them with work - we order loads of machines and never have any issues with performance - but we replace them every 2-3 years anyway (work policy due to the nature of our business, developing software). I don't know enough about component specs, as we have a guy who orders them all. But my mate always buys from them too for his work laptops, and he's a bit more hardware savvy. I'd certainly buy one over something from Currys/PC World.

My standard answer would be "Get a Mac" ;)

Every Windows based machine I've had (for personal use) has died a death within 3 years - despite rigorous maintenance and decent spec.

Had two MacBooks - my first one lasted nearly 9 years with no signs of slowing down, only had to replace it because wife broke the screen! Current one is at 3 years and counting.

Yes, you pay more for one, and everyone thinks you're a hipster, but I've never, ever had a problem with them. (kiss of death :D)
