Needing a new laptop which will be strictly for work and T'interweb etc no doubt they'll be some video editing (family stuff) etc etc but with the way technology and gadgets have gone I'm wondering if theres an alternative to an expensive laptop? but with very similar functionality?

no gaming or anything 'fun'

What will you be using it for re work? Just word processing etc or more taxing things?

Also do you need the portability of a laptop or will it just sit on a desk at home?

mostly word processing and internet, portability would be good but it will be used at a desk/table a lot but I'd also like to use it on my knee in front of the telly etc

Is screen size important?? I am fully converted to the world of Ultrabooks. Mine is a 13" screen toshiba Z930. weighs just over a kilo, super super fast and so portable. i need small, as i do a lot of travel, and a big old 15.6" laptop in a bag kills me over a few days in london.

Have you considered an iPad?

I had a laptop & a desktop both used for work, never thought I could work with just an iPad but the other 2 weren't used for months and were eventually sold.

iOS 7 ships with iworks which covers word processing, spreadsheets and also has video editing software. Ideal for use in front of the telly and if I need to do a longer bit of work then i simply put it on a stand and use a bluetooth keyboard with it.

I am by no means an Apple fanboy but it really is a great bit of kit.

If it is for word processing etc I would not go with a tablet, stick with a laptop. You will not need a high end one at that, I seen a Toshiba in Argos today which was 1Tb hard drive 4gb RAM and Intel i3 processor for £350 which I thought was a great price as this would probably out spec an ipad.
