In celebration of my rapid progress over the last 12 months, I'm considering treating myself to a new set of irons.

There's nothing wrong with my current set really, and clearly they've served me well, although I would say that iron play is the thing I could really do with improving if I'd like to continue my progress, but to be honest, since when has any of that ever mattered when it comes to a new set of shineys?!

If I do go for a new set, I will want to go for a proper custom fitting, possiby from the manufacturer themselves, although not ideal as I'm not set on any particular manufacturer at this stage, or a high quality centre that does a comprehensive fitting for a number of brands. To that end, what are people's thoughts on Silvermere? I had a good fitting there in the past for a driver, would be good to hear from the experiences of others, and also to get any recommendations you might have for other similar places in the South East (I'm Kent based but near the M25 and don't mind a bit of a drive).

I will also want something that feels a bit special, my current set certainly wouldn't stand out from a crowd (although with the black pearl finish wearing off, they might stand out for the wrong reasons....) and something I could use for a long time. The idea of forged clubs appeals, are they less durable in the long term?

So anyway, at the moment, my favourite two sets, really just on appearance are:

Srixon Z745
Mizuno JPX850 forged

I want a good looking club, but something that offers a little bit of help - as I said above, iron play is possibly one of the weaker parts of my game, I certainly wouldn't categorise myself as a great ball striker (although I must confess I don't really know what makes someone one of those anyway...).

Any suggestions for any other clubs along the lines of these that I should consider?

Can you get to west mailing?
The club fitting there is good.

I can - I've had a couple of lessons down there with Paul Page since he moved from Kings Hill.

The only thing is, I'm not sure they stock the Srixons.

The range at Manston stocks srixon but can't say I was too impressed with the fitters, they seemed too keen to get me into graphite shafts even though I said I preferred steel.

If you can look at the Cobra Fly Z + Forged irons.

I have the predecessor (AMP Forged) and thy are absolutely great clubs. Plenty forgiving but look lovely at the ball.

I'm considering some myself as the newer ones aren't covered in Rickie orange.....!

Mizuno, why even ask the question? ;)

Just worth pointing out to the OP that for us mortals there shouldn't be any concern about wear on forged irons. They will take many many years of punishment, durability won't be an issue. Get fitted and enjoy whatever you choose.

I use the 825 Pros, which I was fitted for just after they launched and they still look lovely. I don't exactly care for them either. I mix them up and clatter them around in a mix of trolley and carry bags. After nearly two years of use they're still lovely.

Another vote for the JPX, I love mine. Plus Mizuno dont charge for shaft upgrades and have probably the best fitting system around

From someone who used to play Mizuno, changing to the Srixons was a no brainer. Without doubt the best irons I've ever hit and the best by far for the money. For the OP I would not dismiss the Z545 model in the longer irons, especially if your iron play is weak. The great things about the Srixons is the seamless way you can blend the set from the Z545 Z745 and even use a couple of the Z945 for your shorter irons.

No other manufacturer offers this.........

Not seen too many Srixons about and not tried any but you seems a strong advocate. I'm at Silvermere at the weekend and will be interested to see them in the flesh

You can do it with

Taylormade TP Irons - CB/MC Combo or MC/MB combo

Titliest also with the CB Forged MB combo

Callaway with the Apex and Apex Pro or Apex Pro and Apex MB combo sets

Believe Nike also do combo

Wouldn't be surprised to know if you can combo the Mizunos also

The Srixons are lovely though

Interesting thought on combining the z545 with z745.

I'd probably only go for 5 - PW so possibly 5 & 6 iron in z545 and the rest z745.

Hmmm....tempting.
