Hi All

First post on the forum so hello to everyone.

Dug my clubs out the loft in July and started playing, have got my handicap down to 26.4 (although not an official club handicap did it on golfshake) and been playing ok but not consistent (as per 99.99% of golfers i would guess).
Have been told by quite a few people that my clubs are too small for me (im 6ft 3) and so after much searching on web bought myself a set of mizuno mx100's with 0.5" longer shaft and 2 degree upright lie. Now i have to say that my iron shots have been the strongest part of my game, my driving is very hit and miss and my putting is atrocious but from say 160 yds in i can hit the green say 7 or 8 times out of 10.
Took the new clubs up to driving range last night and really struggled with them which i was expecting given they are different to those im used to but the strange thing was that hitting the 4,5,6,7 and 8 iron they all went the same distance (about 130 yds!!) that would normally be about 8 or 9 iron territory for me, but with these every shot went a similar trajectory and distance no matter what club i used!!! all the shots were very straight which was nice and obviously as im not confident with them i probably wasnt 'going for it' but still seemed to make no sense to me at all. Also i always hit the ball very very high and i would of thought a more upright stance would bring this down a bit but if anything they seemed to go even higher than normal!
Is this just teething problems that i can work through or should i give it up as a bad lot and stick with my (too short for me!) irons that i do hit pretty sweet??
Any ideas would be a great help as im pretty damned confused at the mo and dont know what to do for the best!

Hi there, welcome to the forum.

Don't be dismayed with your new clubs just yet, give yourself a chance to get aquainted with them and find out just how they fee compared to your old ones. The club details you gave should mean that they are around about right for your height, although that is not necessarily correct.

Give them a try, if I remember correctly, that model has a fairly braod sole and quite a bit of offset, that may be causing you a little grief. Stick with it and try them out in a sensible fashion. Go with 6,8 & PW and try those, then work on other clubs. Trying all of them at once may be too much to handle initially.

Stick in and let us now how you get on. :D

It could just be the range balls!! The reason I say this is one of the ranges I use I get the same sort of thing

I goto another one nearby and totally different.

Take the clubs out on the course and see how you get on, you may find you hit a club longer/shorter but I bet they dont all go the same distance ;)

Thanks, think it makes sense to at least try a proper round with them, am just worried to go out take a horrible score and undo the hard work i had put in to getting better! but in fairness i was hitting the driving range matt pretty hard (getting used to the longer club i suppose) and perhaps on proper ground it may just mean a slightly deeper divot than i normally take (tend to sweep the ball rather than hit under with my current clubs).
I did also borrow a longer driver from someone (callaway) and can't hit that for toffee ! so am sticking with the driver i had been using (wilson).
Think i will take a few of my current clubs (5,7,9) as back up in case it all goes pear shaped.
Will try and find a new avatar ethan!

I'm not sure if this helps, but I was fitted for Mizuno irons in 1997 and got 0.5" +2, the same as you.

I never did get on with them and didn't persevere that long, as I quit in 1999.

I came back to golf a few years ago, started with some off-the-shelf MacGregors in graphite (which were longer anyway) and then moved onto some Mizuno MX900s, 0.5" +2 again. I could hit them OK, but went to Callaways for maximum help (!?).

Every time you swap irons, you will find it hard for a while. Although it's impossible to say (as everyone is different), a player 6'1"-6'3" ought to do just fine with +0.5". The lie is less easy to speculate on....although a Mizuno fitter once told me that this "combo" was a very popular one.....I suspect because Mizunos as standard probably suit the smaller Jap/USA man!! :D Just a theory...

I think the extra length and lie probably are right (pings charts recommend that combination for my height and length of arm), the irons im using at the moment are wilsons and about 10 years old, the mizunos feel far more cumbersome and clumsy, i know they are improvers irons but the wilsons were only a beginners set and feel far more sleek, i know i should really have gone to a pro shop but i knew if i did i would come out with a very big credit card balance !! i think some of the lack of distance on the shots is down to the slower swing i have to take with these over the much lighter wilsons and part down to just getting used to the different length and lie. I guess the test will be playing a round on the course i have played quite a bit as that should give me a fair comparison. I could kick myself really as when everyone kept saying the wilson clubs were too small my instincts said 'so what im hitting them nice!' but then a little voice popped in and added 'but if you can hit the wrong clubs sweet think how good you could hit the right clubs........'

Played my first round with the new clubs yesterday came in 10 shots more than my previous round which was actually not as bad as i was expecting, had quite a few complete mishits and a few overjudgements on clubs lengths. Seem to hit the high irons longer than my previous clubs i.e 130yds par 3 normally use an 8 this time hit it bang on with a 9, but seemed to hit the longer irons shorter than previous clubs i.e 185yds par 3 used to hit consistently with my 4 iron this time the new 4 fell a good 10 to 15 yds short of green, but i guess it will take a bit of getting used to. The mizunos seem to have a slightly closed face and i think the duff shots were where i was opening it up so that it looked right at address to me. All in all think with a bit of practise i should be able to get the hang of it and as the clubs are heavier than my old set should mean i slow my swing down a bit and get a bit more consistency?
Thanks for the advice given
