hi

After a few years playing my Ping I3+ ( definitely not custom fitted!) I'm now looking to change irons and get them custom fitted. I play off 9 and irons are undoubtedly the weakest part of my game.

It's not unusual for me to be 80 yards short of par 4's after my drive and miss the green with a half sand wedge! My consistency with irons just isn't there.

Does anyone have any recommendations for new irons?

also - I've noticed a lot of the custom fit people in my area - Glasgow - only do 1 brand at their custom fit centre. For example, they may do just wilson, or just mizuno....ideally I'd like to go somewhere that has customer fitting for all makes to allow me to compare and contrast.
Any recommendations very much appreciated....

I would probably pay up to about £700 I think.....current pings are steel shaft and was considering switching to graphite.

Don't do it! Had graphite before. Rubbish. So inconsistent. 8 iron was anywhere between 140 and 180 yards. All I want out of irons is to be consistent, and hit an 8 iron about 140, but oh no, half way through the down swing the shaft would light up, and the ball could go any distance. Completely useless.

thanks for the tip-off...had graphites previously before switching to steel, just wondered if the newer graphites were any better than the older ones I had.

I was thinking of Mizunos as they have a large custom fit centre close to glasgow....but they have a reputation as being for top players who work the ball etc, I'm really looking for something to give me added consistency.

Glasgolf,

Don't worry about the Mizuno's. I have the MP30's. Half cavity backs. Quite forgiving and very consistent. You'd not go far wrong getting a set of whatever they've replaced them with now off your handicap.

J_F ... How can you honestly say that Mizuno are better than 'THE BIG EZEEZ' from Slazenger. They are the same tools the pro's are using ;)

Sorry lads, got a bump on the head today and lost abiltiy to be tell the whole truth and nout but.

Go with Miz's they are the muts nuts.

Get down to the nearest store and try out a few irons that catch your eye. sometimes its not the brand you were expecting that does you the most favours.

GG,

Go to Strathclyde Park driving range and ask them to fit you for Cleveland Reds or get a referal to the Mizuno Centre in Cumbernauld (referals only). The Cleveland Red is a club geared for your level and the Pro's (Ian & Euan) will sort you out.

You could do alot worse than get urself a second had set of Ping s59's or a new set of s58's. I bought my s59's two years ago and went from Handicap 4.5 and now I'm at 1.5. so there is something to be said about a good set of iron's.

Mizuno mp 60s are really nice clubs, i use them and find that they are plenty forgiving but still give a lot of `feel` they're semi cavity and you'll probably be able to get them for about £500 new.

My consistency with irons just isn't there.

Sounds to me like the best investment would be a) work out why things are so bad, maybe a lesson or two b) get your current irons checked for bent shafts, lofts and lies c) get down the practice ground!

I know players who drive quite well and are weak with irons and vice versa. It's normally down to a swing which works well for one, but not the other OR problems with posture/alignment/grip etc. Unless there is something drastic up with your pings I'd forget new irons, you're only going to spend a load on being disappointed.

Sorry.....but your set is already much better than most of my single figure mates.

Take the point Dave.....the main reason I'm looking to change is that I got the pings second hand and they have been custom fitted for someone else! They are 3 degrees upright, have regular shafts (I prefer stiff) etc etc.

I agree that there is probably an issue with my iron play in general but I'm hoping by getting a set custom fitted I am at least confident that the clubs then suit me and if I still have iron problems I can then go about fixing them.

OK, so if the set you have were originally set up for a different player, I quite appreciate your thinking.
