Hi all
when I came back to the game 5 months ago I bought a set of Mizuno MP30 irons with stiff S300 steel shafts. Recently I've been struggling and with lessons and trying a Ping i10 7 iron have come to the conclusion that with these shafts I am just not good enough for these clubs and have put them up for sale.
(this is really grating my pride as I love the MP30's and hate cavities)

I just wanted other peoples ideas and opinions as the Ping's are top in terms of price and have also heard good things about Callaway X20's and really don't want to cock up again so any input or ideas would be appreciated.

Have you looked at the MX200? They have a bladed design PW-8 iron then quite small cavity backs in the rest.

Agree mx200s would fit the bill quite a compact cavity i have not used them but used the older model mx25 and i could play them and i dont like cavitys either best of both worlds really

If you like the Pings but not the look of the cavity try the Ping S57 although there is a small cavity, very well hidden, they do have more of the look of a muscle back, yet still with a bit of forgiveness, very similar to the i10

Callaway X20 tour irons are lovely, though still with massive &very ugly cavity. But do perform nicely.

Cleveland do some nice clubs in the CG range & can highly recommend them. Not personally keen on the Gold/Yellow. Much prefering the Red, as I'm not esthetically happy with offset & all offset does is either hide a problem &/ ultimately compound or bring on a problem swing fault. Though this is getting off topic & looks are all important along with performance.

There are lots of good clubs out there with good esthetics that can be considered. Best thing is to get out & try asmany of the ones you like as you can that still will help your game.

Of course you could pay to have the shafts changed, but best trying a set that already have the shaft in you arethinking of beforetaking this route.

I have recently moved from a cavity backed club (X20) to a tour version (TM Tour Burner). Although there is still a reasonably large cavity, the head is much smaller and the top line thinner so it doesn't look as ugly behind the ball as the X20, Burner and most Pings do.

There a loads of different clubs out there with varying degrees of cavity and without knowing how you play it is difficult to recommend one make over any other although I do agree with the comments to date. My best advice would be to go to a large stockist (AG etc) and just try as many as you can and see what feels good in your hand, looks inviting behind the ball and more importantly works best.

Yes thanks for the advice that S57 might be worth a look as are the burners as I say hate the aestheitics of cavities.
Certainly this time I'm going to try as many as possible before deciding

Titleist ZB. I have these. The top line is a little thick, but you have the benefit of blades at the bottom, and small cavities at the top. None of which are noticable from above.

I LOVE the look of the ZB's - but assumed they were only suitable for the very low handicapper?? not someone playing off 18ish??
(tell me otherwise and the cheques in the post!)

;)

Its really no hard & fast rule about topof the range gear only being for low handicap players. Though caution will come into play. Not tried the ZB's mayself so can't say what they are like. My reaction is try them for yorself. see if you like them & are prepared toaccept the results from misshits.

I play off 18(ish) and I can hit bladed clubs with the right shaft in,Although its hard work.

I went for MP52's as they do look like a blade from almost all angles but do have a very discreet cavity and nice lines to suit.

Carlsberg dont make irons, but if they did, they'd probably be mizuno

Just how much difference does the shaft make for a higher handicaper. I'm 18 myself and will probably be looking to try and change my clubs during this year. Think I'll be going for something with a bit of a cavity though as off 18 there are obviously a number of issues with my swing and ball striking. Are you talking about the difference between a Uniflex type shaft and a Dynamic Gold ? I'm obviously going to look for all the help I can get in new clubs.
