I'm thinking of buying a new iron set and am trying to make a decision between:

- Mizuno MX-1000
- Cobra SZ
- Callaway x22

Money is not the question, I'm more interested in the clubs themselves, and will I actually notice any difference.

I'm currently off 18 and am using Ram ZX irons, but want to move to a better set.

Any opinions / thoughts welcomed

All of these are good irons, and there are loads more besides. I would say that the main factors are playability and how they look to you. There really is no substitute for demoing and fitting. Don't be put off fitting because you are a higher handicapper.

All of those makes have national fitting centres in the UK. Mizuno have one in SW London, and others in Wrexham and Cumbernauld. Callaway is in SW London too, and Cobra/Titleist in Cambridgeshire. Fitting is free and good fun, and now is a good time to book.

i was fitted for the callaway x22's this year, they are great clubs m8. i really feel the middle of the club, (when i hit it,lol) and have gained maybe 5yds a club from my old x14's.Whatever you do, get fitted, its VITAL to improve your game!

Not keen on Callaway irons, in fact its only their putters I like. Cobra are bringing out a new SZ Max range in a few weeks so I would get a feel for them.

I would go for the G15 Irons if I was you, or maybe the I15 irons if you don't like chunky at address.

My advice would to be go and try several makes at somewhere like AG or Nevada Bobs, and utilise their launch monitor computer-thingy. Then discuss it with your pro, if you are a member of a golf club. Once you have decided on the make, then go to one of their fitting centres for a proper custom fit, where you will be able to try out models, shafts, kickpoints, loft, lie...etc.

Top advice. Wish I'd done this. Very happy with my custom fit clubs but still wonder if another brand would have suited my swing even more. If you are in London there's a great Nevada Bobs by Liverpool street station.

Shop around. Be careful of the AG launch monitor as the staff aren't necessarily always fully trained to interpret the figures. Have a word with your pro and ask his advice. If money is not a problem then C/F is definitely the way to go irrespective of make

Tour Edge Exotics are worth a look if you get a good deal, my low handicap mate had a shot of mine last weekend and rates them which made me feel better as they are not well known over here.

Dont buy this years models, they'll all have v-grooves. Get last years models at reduced prices with u-grooves, far better.

Only look at Ping if you are over 65, and have one foot in the grave.
Ugly clubs for the older golfer.

Clearly Imurg is way too young for them, which is why they don't work for him.

Custom Fitting is a most for every level of player and its amazing the difference it makes...
Ensure you hit the club out-doors, or often your local pro will allow you to take a demo club out on the course... This way you can get a proper feel for the club.
Dont wurry to much about the new groove law as it only kicks in at 2024 and even then it is likely to be put back further at that point.

Taylor made burner 08/09 model are very forgiving and explosive off the face (my tip)

Concur with the customer fitting advice. I got new irons last year and the guy had me hitting lots of different makes, shaft options etc before picking the one that I hit best.
