New ideas for danger holes.

Well, Saturdays game started in fine fashion, birdie op's at 1 and 3, safe pars at 2 and 4. Then the two holes of death grabbed 2 double bogeys in normal style....finished the 9 holes par, bogey, par for a decent, but disappointing +5. I'm running out of strategies for the two danger holes and am slowly, but surely, loosing my bottle on both.

Can anyone remember doing something "off the scale" wierd on problem holes.

Yesterday I tried 2 x 6 irons followed by 110 yard wedge on the 440 yd 6th. On the previous hole, 5 wood, hooked (deliberate) 8 iron, leaving 90-ish, then missed that green as well (really nasty up-hill GW, thinned through the back :D)

Is there a point at which I may as well just hit the driver, go find (rough, trees, OOB), hit it again and keep going even if I end up with 7 or 8?

I need some new ideas....please help.....

Back 9 was different, my ball seems destined to come out of the top of my G5 (and go high and woefully short) despite teeing it up lower and lower?...made 6 bogeys and a double for +8.

Has anyone had this problem with their driver? Out the middle :) but also off the top 3rd of the face :D

Any tips???

Cheers,

Yours, still seeking that "12" off whites, Dave :)

I know waht you mean Dave, I've got a couple of holes like that too.

What about 3 x 8 irons on the 6th?? or whichever club = 3 standard blows to 440 yards.

I'd just keep trying different combinations until something works..

Yeh......that would be wierd......can you imagine the looks?

What are you teeing off with Dave?....."oh, just an 8 :)"

I might try it just for the madness...... :)

If it works and gets you a better score than normal then there is no madness in it. Give it a go until you regain any confidence you may be lacking at the moment.

I think you need to revisit some of Bob Rotella's (or similar) work and get your mental side right. I know from playing so badly for nearly a year now that when I approach my 6th even if I've played levels 2's for the first 5 holes there is no way I am going to hit a decent shot on the par 3. In medal it is 3 off the tee 8/10 times and in stableford it is normally a single point at best.

I'm reading a couple of the Rotella books at them moment and at least they are getting me to think about things with a slightly more positive outlook. Wherever that will help when I stand there next Sunday in a medal time will tell.

Having played with you Dave I'm surprised you've let it get this bad. You have a good swing and are a decent player so I don't understand how one hole is becoming such a nemesis. Have you tried asking the pro or one of the assistants for some advice?

Dave are these holes the dog leg right with the trees on the right? and then the long par 5 with the up hill approach?

Yes....it's driving me mad! I feel it's all in the mind. Normaly, hitting an iron into the green I'm pretty relaxed....if I miss the green, I've still got a chance at par and if not, well, a bogey will do.

I can't work out which hole is worse. On the first (of the two) I tend to hit a decent drive but then the options get a little tricky. On the second, it's the drive that gets me as there is a big tree at about 170 which encroaches, so I can't aim down the left and play my normal 10yd (?) fade. Yesterday, I tried to deliberately hook the tee shot, but I seem to have lost that shot of late on the two holes where I really need it!! I can hook a lay-up anyday of the week....see it's a frazzled brain....

You are thinking the fourth and seventh. The fourth is just a case of hitting far enough (you parred it!), yesterday that was fine. I made a 7 there against you....but that was just a train crash after hitting my pitch into the bunker!!!!

It's the next two.....one uphill after the drive and the next just v.v.long.....(you didn't exactly "play" it, as you were cruising back down the 5th!!!)

Dave the problem could be your spine angle or lack of it make sure you tilt your right shoulder slightly down this will give you a better angle of attack.

Dave - if you remember the 6th at 'Dovey you'll know the wind, OOB down the right and thick rough left will screw the card good and proper if you think about it too much. Everyone will muck this hole up without question and everyone here has a view on how it's played - even taking a knock-down 9 to get to the yellow tee box and feel safer from there on in!

Personally, I will choke down on a 3 or perhaps the rescue and attempt not to release through. The ground runs so well that I will gain some yardage. OK, then I'm left with a long iron again but still in play and a nice bail out right of the green.

(The new website is up and running with a decent course guide!)

Taking driver is such a tempting club to reach for, even when you know in your heart that its going to be a high pecentage shot.

For instance I can hit every club in my bag straight or even with draw most days of the week, but put a driver in my hands & next thing I can be coming through open & the next thing is big slice, especially If I really go for it. That said I can hit some really straight & powerful drives, but just recently I've had keep it straight keep it left in my head & the next thing is its a stinger with driver right down the centre, instead of the usual towering drive. Or worse still a low weak hook.

440 yards I'd probably say take 3 wood or 5 wood off the tee & then anything up to another 3 or 5 wood off the fairway, though it'll probably be 5 iron or 6 iron distance.

Though some holes seem to have a habit of playing a lot longer than you'd expect.

Why not take a driver and not hit it so hard, save effort, energy and hit more accurately? I think golfers think too hard too often. Many probs you simply cannot correct there and then, it just goes that way sometimes, but you are more likely to come out of the gloom if you stop thinking about it to the point of changing your game to suit a perceived problem. Nothing wrong with taking a variation of clubs on a hole if thats your choice but if its as a result of concerns from an earlier hole Im not sure it solves anything even though it may get you through a hole with a decent score.

Ahh got ya!

Yes very tricky, but fun holes, well cant really comment on the 6th, as you say I didnt exactly play it. I would play the percentage on those holes everytime. Leave my fave distances in to the green (as you so kindly taught me)

The uphill approach on the 5th is difficult though because even if you had 120 it wouldn't play 120 would it.
