Morning all, hope today finds you all well. My names Craig and I've just recently got into golf. To be honest that isn't completely true I got given sone clubs 10 year ago or so and used to go to the driving rang a few times but only ever played one 9 hole game and I was rubbish.

Ive started to go back up to the driving rang with the intention of getting out in the course in a few months time but I have a few questions in hoping you could help me with.

First off Is my grip, I've had a look in the net about different types of grip and also watched a few guys at the range and they all seem to have the left had at the top of the club with the right below. I'm right handed but this doesn't feel natural or comfortable for me and I've had my right hand at the top with my left below.

Is this an issue ?

also my fingers are really sore after Bering on the range for a few house and then ache for a few days after. Is this normal?

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

Craig

Sore and ache is possible quite normal to start.
Rather than suffer on your own to start try at least 2/3 lessons or a beginners group course to at least set the fundamentals right, it will help in the long run.
Good luck and enjoy and welcome to the forum.

Thank you for the welcome I have had a look at a beginners course at the local club and it will be something I will be looking at in a few weeks time

Welcome to the forum.
Sound like you are gripping too tight and this could be why you get sore hands.
Try relaxing that a bit down to 4 or 5. Dont worry, the grip is designed to stop you losing the club (unless they are well worn)

Left hand at the top might feel un natural but it is the right way and the more you persevere the more natural it starts to feel.

Good luck.

Thank you for the advice. The clubs I have been using are at least 20 years old or more. I'm back on the driving range on Wednesday but I will be using my brothers clubs this time as his are a lot newer and I'm hoping I will feel more confident about not sending a club down the range after the ball

Certainly seems you are gripping too tight.

'Cack-handed' grip may feel better at the moment, but worth changing to left hand above now - while you can. There are (a very) few good golfers with left hand low grips and some teachers refuse to teach folk with this grip! It's a good grip for putting though - shoulders tend to stay level better.

You need to remember you're asking your muscles to do something they haven't done before. That is the real reason why you're sore. You won't be used to swinging a golf club a 100 times, or more. You need to be careful not to over do it the first few times you go to the range. At the very least take a couple of breaks, go for a walk, go to the putting green, then back to the range - after all when you play on the course you'll only take one shot, then rest the shoulders, arms, wrists and hands while you walk to the ball.

Welcome to the forum Craig, it's a raging cesspit of prejudice, extremism and barely concealed hatred. With a bit of golf thrown in. ;)

With regards to your grip then it might sound daft but it sounds like you are left handed at golf. When you say you are right handed do you mean you write and play racket sports or darts with your right hand? If so then this does not preclude you from being left handed at golf. Or cricket. I am exactly the same in that I am right handed in just about everything and very right footed at football. But I play golf left handed as playing right handed just feels weird to me. Do you play tennis right handed but feel very comfortable with a double handed backhand? If so that's another clue that you may be left handed at golf. And I am not 100% sure, but I think Big Phil writes right handed.

I used to play with right handed clubs but with a left handed golf grip, and believe you me, that way lies madness. Try and beg, steal or borrow a left handed club or even better a set and have a go down the range with them. Don't worry too much about how well the shots go, but see if it feels more natural. As if it does you sound like a lefty to me. So welcome to the club, and don't be embarrassed. Bookmark http://www.lefthandedgolf.co.uk/ in your favourites and just say Big Phil and Bubba sent you.....

Thanks for the info, yes i play racket sports and write with my right hand but im left footed when it comes to football. ill see if the range has any left handed clubs I could try it is strange though as my friend and I both have the same issues.

Sounds like you are lefty at golf to me. Yes you will come up against a lot of prejudice, sinistrophobic comments and even hatred. But remember they are just bigots, in fact it would not surprise me if some of them are closet lefties themselves and are over compensating for hiding away their true feelings.

I say be out and proud, tell your friends, tell your family, I bet they will have guessed already anyway, don't live the lie any longer, it's 2013, it's legal now.

Young man, there's a place you can go. I said, young man, when you're short on your dough. You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find any ways to have a good time.

My first port of call would be to get the clubs regripped if they are old. It doesn't have to be a bank breaker. That will give you a better contact with the club and stop you holding it too tight. After that get some lessons. If you have firm foundations to build a game on you'll be in a better position to move forward

I'm just going to use my brothers clubs for now as they are a lot better and a lot newer plus with 3 kids he doesn't really have time to play ill report back on Wednesday with how I get on
