Good afternoon/evening everyone.

I was bought a set of golf clubs as a birthday present as i expressed an interest in taking up golf. I don't really have much experience of playing, mainly a few times around a course and the odd trip to the driving range.

Im hoping to get some advice on my swinging technique, i end up slicing near all of my drives and my irons always veer to the right. I also feel a twinge on the left hand side of my back after a few shots.

Anyway, i look forward to all the advice i will hopefully receive and am very grateful for all responses :)

Hello welcome and enjoy. :)

As your just beginning if your local club/driving range has some starter group lessons get yourself on a course before any bad habits get ingrained in.

As others have and will say, get some lessons. There are one or two very good coaches on here, but your slice could be caused by several reasons, and it is very common shot for a lot of golfers. And a pro should be able to tell you what they are give you some tips to sort it out. Don't worry, they have seen it all before.

What clubs do you have? Also what are you using to drive with? If it's a driver then I'd say try a 3,5 wood or even a hybrid if you are just starting. Generally the lower your loft the more the slice will be exaggerated, so drive using a club that gets the ball as near the fairway as possible, not what you think you should be using.

And enjoy your golf, it is a very frustrating game with lots of arcane rules and seemingly strange traditions, and at times it will probably drive you to the point of madness. But you will keep coming back for more, we all do...;)

Like others have said get yourself some lessons. What i would say though if you are going to do group ones then look for a beginners course as probably would put you off if everyone was miles better than you.

Also a big welcome to a great but sometimes very frustrating game.

Keep us updated on how you get on.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy

You could go a few ways

get someone to video your swing and then have a look at it yourself and maybe compare it to others on the web - no cost

Or you could post it on here and get some opinions from the people on here - no cost

Or pop in to see a pro - a lot seem to be doing beginner lesson deals

go to your nearest cash convertors and exchange your clubs for a snooker cue, this will save you years of mental torture!!!!!!!!!!

oh and WELCOME.

To fit in there are several things that you need to achieve..
300y+ with your 7i
19 pair of shoes
Full appreciation of HNSP
Find your MPA using NGT
Get fitted for your towel, tees and umbrella..

if you havent, then you will soon do.....

on BTW welcome, if you are more madcap than handicap, you will fit right in. Dont get too serious and enjoy the game - you cant win, so why try...

btw - no need to put "" "" around golfer. If you play golf you are a golfer you can't be a pretend one - you are one of us and there is no way out now :)

Depends who you listen too...

A comment that was overheard in the club bar about my matchplay first round match - 'Did you hear Dave (HC7) was knocked out by one of the new members. Who's not even a real golfer, plays off 23 or something'

Welcome, as long as you dont post anything funny, interesting, controversial, critical or offend anyones mates even though they are probably not offended anyway, then you'll fit in just fine......
