Hi there folks new forum member here (and sort of a newish golfer!) so be gentle ;)

Been browsing the forums for a couple of days, found them by accident as was trying to find reviews of my local golf clubs, pretty glad I did!

Anyway got a couple of newbie questions that I'd like to ask.

Handicaps - As i've never been a member of a club, I only ever played every now and then (and on my Uncles Memorial Comp between family and friends), I have never had a handicap. I understand I have to submit 3 scorecards to my club for my handicap to be calculated, but is it competition scorecards or am I able to just submit my own from my first 3 rounds?

Club Set - Currently I don't have the greatest set in the world so will be looking to upgrade them as I play more over the summer. Firstly I'll be looking to go for a set of irons, just now I used my dads old set of wilson blades (think they are older than me to be honest!) Basically i'll be looking to spend around 200-300 on a set of irons probably by the end of march. A guy from work recommends the Wilson Di7s and someone else has said the TaylorMade Burner SuperLaunch, has anyone got any other info on these?

Club/Course - Now im 22 and live in Edinburgh and there is a couple of courses within 2 miles of my house with an under 25 discount, these are Lothianburn and Swanston. Im more inclined to join swanston as it's slightly cheaper and also I've played the old layout a couple of times. An old school friend also said that there wasn't a lot of medals on the Lothianburn Calendar. Is there anyone on here who have played/been a member of either of these clubs?

I had no intention of writing a short story but got carried away, sorry about that!

Welcome DJ to the wonderful world of Golf and the GM forum.

Dont know the clubs you mention but no doubt some knowledgable chap or chappess on here will.

Lots to learn so dont be afraid to ask anything.

Welcome DeeJay. You shouldn't have to submit competition cards to get an official handicap, but generally you have to submit three cards (completed and signed by a member) for your handicap to be calculated. When I got my handicap, my club treated the best of the three cards as my starting handicap (unfortunately my 3 cards were 28, 28 and 21 handicap so I was given a handicap which took me a couple of years to play to). I'm not sure whether this is still the method used, or whether an average is calculated. there are plenty of knowledgable golfers on this forum who'll let you know.
Unless you are a low handicapper, you would do well to try some of the many 'improver' irons. You should find them a lot more forgiving. Maybe a forum member from your neck of the woods can suggest a good shop where you can try out a number of different irons, preferably on a range, rather than in a net.
I'm afraid I've never played in Scotland (being a 'soft' southerner)
Happy hunting with your irons and golf club.

Welcome DeeJay. ( Hey lads lots of new faces joining us lately). In answer to your questions:-
1) Go round with a member on three occasions and hand in the cards signed by you and the member. You could mix this with a competition for handicap only.
2) Try out different clubs and get the best you can afford. There are good S/H offers out there as most forum members it seems to me are constantly going for the latest gear:whistle:
3) Sorry live in the warm south so no idea.

Another bloddy salt'n'sauce East coaster!

Welcome onboard Deejay, there are a good few Eastie Beasties on here. Delb or DCB or Tommo or Driven2distraction (and others) should be able to sort you out with a course review. I ain't played any. My knowledge of the Capital courses are Mortonhall and Duddingston, both superb.

Iron wise. How about a lovely set of Pings. Have a look in the For Sale section. I'm sure I saw a great deal on a set of i15's!!!!

Thanks for the replies guys, good to feel welcomed :)

I'm off work tomorrow (took a holiday so I don't miss out on my T In The Park ticket!) so will call up the club to talk about memberships then maybe head over to my local American Golf and see if they have any demos I can use on the range.

Thanks again for the welcome

Welcome to the forum DeeJay :) the Di7s are a good club though a little chunky. They'll certainly get it airborne for you. You'd probably be able to get the Di9s for a similar price now but like the others said shop around a bit. Good luck with it all.

hello and welcome, hope you have fun at AG and find something you like the look of, as previously mentioned plenty of used sets about at reasonable cost. then enjoy having a round with new shineys or even used ones always an exciting propect to get out and try them on the course for the first time!

You need 3 handicap cards signed and marked no need for comp cards just mark the tees used on them the cards are then "edited" any treble and above bogeys are made doubles totals added and the difference between your total and SSS on the best of the 3 becomes your handicap.

sure some there will be someone with knowledge of the possible course you mention and maybe others in the area.

enjoy!

Well i'm just back in, had a busy little day so far!

Firstly got my T in the park ticket organised, I know that's what most of you were looking to know anyway! And by Friday I will officially be a member of Swanston New Golf Club, I decided on Swanston purely down to having played and enjoyed the old course. On the Drive up to the new clubhouse (which looks brilliant) I realised how massive the club has grown now since I last played!

After signing my application and paying I decided to take a 5 minute drive down to American Golf at the Braids Hill driving range and to hit my first golf ball in about 8 months. Pretty pleased with my consistency on my PW and 7I, my rescue/hybrid wasn't as good but when I wasn't rushing and slowed my swing I was hitting 175 regurarly, my best swing hit the 200 marker (No idea how accurate the markers are), and we will just not talk about my driver ;)

Had a wee look around the shop and saw new TaylorMade Burner Plus Irons and Nike Slingshots both on offer at the same price and both caught my eye, asked a member of staff what the chances of a demo when I go to buy a set of irons would be and they were fine so I shall be popping back in sometime soon to make a purchase of a set of Irons, might not be these sets as there was some 2nd Hand Pings (think they were Rapture set and a set of g15) at roughly the same price as the TM and Nike.

Anyway had a good morning, thought I'd let you know.
