morning

I am wanting to return to golf in a big way this year. I started to work offshore a few yrs back and i started to slowly stop playing golf and i havent even played in 3 yrs. I am seriously wanting back into it. I am willing to join a gym to get my fitness back up also with my job now i have plently time to play golf

I was playing off 4 handicap when i stopped and wanting to improve in that by the end of this year. I know alot of you will be saying no chance etc etc but i think i can do it tho. If i work hard and get back into it early i can hopefully manage it.

My clubs i have were custom fitted to myself nearly 8 years ago and think its time for a complete new setup.

This is the setup am going to be buying next week.

Driver : Titleist 907 D1 10.5 degree
Fairway wood : Titleist 904F 15.5 degree
Irons : Titleist 755
Wedges: Titleist Vokey Oil can milled 52 degree And 58 degree
Putter: Scotty Cameron Studio style newport 2

I am just going to go out and play a few rounds to get back into it and go for my handicap again at my local course but any help on routine practice and fitness tips would be good.

sorry for the long post and hope it makes sense

Regards

Richie

have you tried the range of titleist clubs you mentioned your going to purchase? If not I would leave yourself open to interpretation and try some other makes/models as well, see what a pro reccomends. I personally don't see the point in going somewhere to purchase a particular club without trying others because you will never know if they are the right clubs for you. And even if you plan on gonig to a titleist fitting centre (sounds like you might be) try a few of the different clubs in their range, and choose by what you get on with best not what you like best cosmetically/design wise.

Welcome to the forum, you have chosen the right place to re-introduce your self to the wonderful game!

Am sure with plenty of practice you be back to your best in no time. Remember, practice makes permenant. (hides from Tiger haters)

Your long game will be fine, it's the short game you'll need to put in the practice time on having been away from the game, playing off 4 needs a good scrambling ability, you need a lot of pars which equals lots of getting down in two from around the green - practice chipping and putting hard and you'll be fine.

thanks of the replys guys

Well to be honest i like the titleist clubs and not keen on any others. i know it might sound silly but thats just how i feel.

Also no i havent tryed any of the clubs yet but am not wanting to have a bag of mixed makes of clubs either.

its like riding a bike you will never forget but i know will take a wee while to get the touch back around the greens thats why am starting now nice and early to hopefully get upto speed before the season starts.

Also anyone got any ideas on fitness plan. As i will be working 2 weeks away and then 2 weeks at home which will be playing golf all the time. I will be starting going to the gym offshore aswell and starting to eat alot better but want to continue it aswell when i come home.

any help would be great

As a previous fitness fanatic i would say dont ask anyone else about a fitness plan. You have to figure out what area's you would like to improve ( cardio, upper body strength etc) and then decide how your going to do it. Can always take suggestions from people when you know what you want to do. You could also try golf specific excercises. If your gym off shore has an instructor (which i would think not) you could always ask him/her to put something together after you figure out what you want to acheive.

What i would suggest is practicing your balance, Brush ya teeth standing on one leg or whilst waiting for the kettle to boil etc. Dnt laugh as this is quite a good excercise and we all know how important balance is to golfers!

Never having got near 4(!), I don't know how things will go.
I quit for longer than you and am only finding my long game now, after 5 months (albeit over the winter).
Your short game will feel terrible, but mine came back quicker t.b.h. than the rest.

I found fitness quite a battle, but that's over now...not so much downright tiredness, more aching feet and loss of concentration towards the end.

Interesting you want to change all your clubs? My plan was to stick with what got me down to 8, but to update my driver and putter. In the end I got a new 3 wood (much better than the old) a driver (just payed for a different one though!) and invested in a 3 hybrid.

I look forward to hearing how you do, you are brave to expect to get back to such a high level, but with full comittment and lots of practice, I don't see why not. After all, you must have had some great ability (unlike me!)

i have the time when am home to play alot of golf so thats why i am expecting to get back to a high standard.

Reason am changing my clubs is my irons were custom fitted good few years ago when i was a teenager and i have changed alot since then so time for a fresh start with everything.

Going to start buying clubs next week and get a few rounds in before i go back offshore

Hi, Can you over golf? yes.

You will know yourself whether you need to step back from it or whether you go out for a round or up to the range instead.

12 days in a row could be too much if your expecting improvement after improvement to come. Breaking it up with a few hours one day on the chipping/putting green and a few hours another day at the range may help keep your appetite healthy.

Only you will know though whether its worth going out.

Welcome to the forum fairmorn, I played 6 days straight once, the first couple of days were good but towards the end of the week I was realy struggling to hit any decent shots.

Now when I have the time I play every second day at most.

Welcome Fairmorn.

So far as the fitness part is concerned don't neglect some regular stretching. Lower back and shoulders will need to be flexible if you're gonna play so much. Been neglecting that myself lately and the swing is shortening and am losing distance.

Can recommend the Titlesit 907 D1, by the way, Have it myself and really like it.

well i do plan on doing a routine over the 12 days tho with fitness and practice thru my whole game and throw in a few rounds aswell.

But over the 12 days at a time i hopefully see a improvement turn over quite quickly to start with anyway
