Which will improve my game?

Would I really be able to tell the difference?

My irons are an old Wilson set I brought in 2010, but have not really been used all that much, certainly not once a week. So they are still in good condition. I can strike the ball fairly well - 5 iron about 185/190 yards - and have confidence in them. Would I benefit from new irons? Has the technology moved on that much for irons?

My woods are TaylorMade RZR and I am not looking to change until I get 100% confident with them and will have the full fitting etc. (my longest drive this year according to my Garmin was 283yrds)

I do though have a very old putter and I am not very consistent with my putting. Are the new putters really that much better?

I also only have 1 wedge which is a SW. So do I look at new lob wedges?

I am already having lessons, but where do you all think the best investment is in terms of equipment?

Thanks,

Nick

If your having lessons, why not speak to the pro and see what they think. They will know your game better and be able to advise on if any improvement could be made from a change.

More choice and shaft options definately over the last 10 years but looking at your figures I don't think you have any problems with distance or finding the middle of the club.
I'd just stick with the lessons and practice as much as you can.

Edit.. I remember when I started out I had a cheapo putter.
I eventually bought a Ping Anser X and I couldn't believe the difference, especially in the consistency of the strike and the predictably of the distance. It made a huge difference.

I don't think "are newer putters that much better?" is the right question. The question is more: is there another putter out there, new or old, which would suit you better. The only way to find that out is to either try as many as you can (for example by borrowing one from your playing partners as often as you can and by trying all models your local pro shop will let you). Or you could even go for a putter fitting. With putters it is not so much a question of new technology, it is more about what feels right and works for you. I have a used putter which I got on ebay and which is about 30 years old. And I absolutely love it.

Thanks everyone.

I am seriously considering a putter, and possibly a new wedge but I seem to do alright with my PW and SW, but I feel I could easily save 3-5 shots / make more pars or birdies per round by improving on the greens.

Have you had a putting lesson yet?

Currently in my bag I have an X2hot/3-wood, Ping Karsten C67 putter, 50* Tour Edge wedge, 56* Cleveland CG15 wedge, the rest are 15/16yr old Mizuno T-zoid Pro 2's (3-P) and I'm currently playing the best I've ever played, I'm smashing the 3-wood a country mile, my accuracy with the irons has improved 10 fold, I'm dropping the wedges on a sixpence and regularly can 10ft+ putts, so much for new and improved, sometimes something (old or new) just feels rite !...

Ps, as for your 2010 irons, old by today's standards I suppose, but not that old !...

As someone who upto a couple of months ago(ignoring putter that I changed last year), only had clubs that were 10-15 years old and not a great striker of the ball.

I can say that for me I have not really noticed much difference. Certainly not enough to spend money on new stuff, sure I must be wrong.

I recently only changed my driver as I was having problems with the shaft in my TM 360Ti and it wasn't worth paying for a reshaft over buying a new driver.

Irons still love my X14s(must be 15 years old at a guess) and can not feel any difference to my sons newer irons for instance. I still have old tight lies woods. I did buy a new tight lies Ti 3 wood but did not notice any difference and currently has not made my bag. I am going to try the newer Ti 5 wood as direct golf are selling off the stuff cheap.

So I would say if you are happy with the way you play with them, why change.

However I have a PW, AW, LW and another bladed lob webge(for sliding under the ball with as the x14 lob wedge is fairly bulkie).

So I would buy an approach/gap wedge as I would have thought you have a fair distance between PW and SW and below a SW, so a LW ? (I have gaps of about 10 yards between all clubs from a 7 iron to 60 degree LW)
