I went to see my Pro down the range yesterday for a new driver, trying 5 TM Burner, Wilson staff, Cobra s9, Yonex nanospeed, G10.

The cobra s9 was probably the best for distance though it had a very dull sound when connecting with it.

The TM burner was very unforgiving for me, if i never hit it almost perfect it would slice.

I didn't like the wilson, everything about it was horrible.

Then came the hardest decision, I was getting excellent height and distance with the Yonex 10.5* but i thought it sounded a tad tinny when coming off the face of the club. Apart from the sound and the grip the Yonex is superb.

I then tried the G10 10.5* and although i was getting decent distance the height was less than the Yonex. So the pro changed the head to 12* and what a difference it made, The height and distance changed a lot.

So i've ordered a G10 12* Stiff which i hopefully will have by next weekend.

I must admit i had i great 2 hours trying the clubs.

What sort of swing speed are you running at the moment Stuart?, stiff sounds a little brisk for most folk.

I play with stiff through out my bag brendy.i was hitting most shots straight and 240+

Re: New Driver

hi forum this is my first reply to a thread, oop north in geordie land, most if not all courses were closed today.so i did the usual ,driving range then try some club's again (3 weeks in a row we hav'nt played)i tried a few drivers but the one that i was most consistant with was the yonex nanospeed 10.5 stiff shaft.which got me thinking do we just do as our friend's say and dont even try a stiff shaft or have you just never tried one if not give it a go and i guess some people will be as surprised as i was.

Re: New Driver

I tried the nanospeed a few weeks ago for the second time. I get 4mph more clubhead speed than my Cleveland about 10 yards or so more distance. However I still can't get over the cheap grip (I know it can be replaced). I have only hit the 10.5 in regular so may be back at AG tomorrow to try the 12. I have an 11 degree Callaway that I have been looking to try again so may give that a bang down the range tomorrow too.

Re: New Driver

The G10 is the best driver on the market for the price!!!!

I will let you know for sure next week when the beauty arrives.

I was very surprised by how much more height/distance i gained by using a 12* loft rather than 10.5.

Hopefully when the G10 is in the bag i will save a couple of shots per round

Good man, some folk use stiff drivers and woods for bragging and big co%k syndrome. I have a firm to stiff fujikura on my Mp600 and s300's on my irons, my woods are more like firm. The last time I checked my swing with the speed stick it was around 110-115mph (I can go a little faster but get out of shape badly.
I think Tiger usually runs around 125mph!! bloody hell! Awesome in the true meaning of the word, especially when you consider every mph above 115 requires increasingly more effort than at lower speeds)

I also have a 12 degree driver, I was fitted by Ping and to be honest I was still seriously considering buying the 10.5 degree option as in my head I was saying there is no bloody way I need a 12 degree driver, thats for woman!! (and I dont mean that to sound sexist so if it offends anyone I apologise in advance!)

I spoke of my concern and the club fitter at St Andrews just grinned and showed my results. The dispersion, spin rate, distance, flight all pointed 101% towards 12 degree.

I ordered the 12 degree but still had doubts in my mind driving back down the road. Once the beast arrived I knew instantly that the club was THE ONE!

Not looked back or regreted it ever since. Most consistant part of my game now is the big stick!

Sorry forgot to mention, ive never used anything more than 9.5 degrees on any of my drivers, I hit a fairly high ball as it is, id love to see if any of the folk using 12degree drivers would see much of a difference with say, a 9.5 or 10 degree driver. 12 to me sounds a little high for most normal built fellas.

A bit of an ignorant reply Brendy!

Distance and consistancy all comes from launch angle which is the key to custom fit. As I said in my earlier post I was shocked, possibly a bit hurt that as a 5 handicaper I was told that a 12 degree was my best fit.

I now know that I have the correct driver for me and during a recent chat with my Pro he also stated that he wouldnt recommend less than 10.5 degree loft for anyone unless they truely needed it and warranted it.

I was told a long time ago and have heard it from various rpos on TV and in various articles that most amateurs play with 10.5 as that is considered the industry bench mark for drivers for amateurs. However most would actually benefit from 11 degrees upwards in terms of launch, spin and carry. I have a 10.5 which flies reasonably low and runs which is ideal in the drier months and I have an 11 degree Callaway big bertha 460 which flies much higher but I get less roll but ideally suited to the current wet conditions.

Whoa there nelly, I said I would be interested to see how someone with a 12 hit a 9.5 or 10, I am speaking from my own experience here, I have never tried a 12 before as I already hit a high and long ball. It was not meant as an offensive nor ignorant post (I do know how fitting works). I think this is another case of words not coming across in print how they were meant.
I would like to see some sort of experiment, I wasnt bad mouthing those with higher lofts. To me 12 degrees does sound high, to others it might be a little low, horses for courses and all that.

My 10.5 D1 is a low flier thats for sure and have considered going to a higher loft recently.
What was your last driver and how did that go (obviously not as well as your current one!) Jon, You hit a good ball, does the height bother you?

what is the optiomum lanunch angle for a driver both myself and my mate have the same swing speed about 112 when we go to the simulator i hit it 40 yards further than him because i launch the ball about 12 to 14 degrees and he launches it 17 or 18 degrees we both have different drivers with 9.5 degrees of loft and have even when we switch the drivers we have the same results
