I'm a fan of Dad's Army. I have the box-set and like the original feature film too, which unlike most sitcom spin-off movies held up pretty well. If being picky then I feel that had Private Jones fallen under a cement mixer then things may have improved. Listening to his "Don't panic" and "They don't like it up 'em" for the millionth time were wearing a tad thin.

So why then attempt to mess with perfection? Yes the new cast is great and the script may even be OK, but I feel if this version makes it through unscathed then it will be more down to the public's goodwill rather than anything else.

The makers might think using a much loved subject would win favour, however if it's been handled incorrectly then the bloodletting will be ugly and unforgiving.

You cannot "re-make" perfection.
The thing that made the original series such a hit was wonderful casting. Brilliant.
I love Dads Army. I too have the box set. I still watch the episodes when they come up every now and then.
I won't even bother to watch this tripe when it comes out.
Some things are best left alone. Dads Army is one of them.
As is the film "Jaws". Please God, do not even attempt a remake.
Sure, with the advent of CGI the effects might be better.
But Dreyfuss WAS Hooper, Shaw WAS Quint and Scheider WAS Brody.

There is always cash to be made from Nostalgia that's why these sort of stuff is churned out. Doesn't bother me - no one is forcing me to go and watch it if I think it is a pile of crap

We went last night, bit of a predictable script but I have to say I enjoyed it.

Was all older people who were there though, and old enough to have watched the original to series.. Cinema wasn't that busy.

Apparantly an old guy from the home guard was on telly the other day and was upset, saying that the real home guard was nothing like that. of course it was not, it was a send up, British comedy at its best.

Wasn't one or both of the original co-writers of Dads Army actually a member of the Home Guard? In which case they should have had some idea of what it was really like. The old guy interviewed worked for an Ordnance factory and specialised in bomb disposal, so perhaps it was a little bit more serious for him!

It's simple. The likes of Porridge and Dad's Army are the template and level to which programmes and films have to aspire and they simply cannot be reached or recreated. It may be a decent film but it will bear only a passing resemblance to the warmth and love of the originals and won't recapture the magic

Yes I saw him and thought it was a bit daft to be honest - nobody said it was really like that - it's comedy at its best.

My take is that some things can't be remade and rehashed and won't come close to the (brilliant) original and, for me, won't be watchable. There was a programme on ITV2 last week "Grease Live" which sounded great on paper but I stuck it for 5 minutes. I thought the soundtrack might be enough to make it watchable but no...John Travolta is Danny, Olivia Newton John is Sandy and actually every other character I saw in the first 5 minutes was just plain wrong for me...couldn't watch it.

I'm looking forward to watching it - good British cast and will be full of cheesy humour and won't take itself too seriously

Should be an enjoyable watch

Just got back from watching it and it was bloody rubbish, a few one liners but 5/10 tops. Gutted coz ave been looking forward to it.

Next film will be Independence Day, some of the trailers before this film were dire.

Sadly I'm not surprised. It could never improve on the original and was always on a hiding to nothing. Think I'll wait for it to come to the TV so at least I can over if it's rubbish

When it is on the telly Homer, get in the back garden and practice on your short game for a couple of hours, it will be time better spent. 👍

ps if you just watch the trailers you have seen all the best bits.

You really didn't like it did you? Not sure my short game can be fixed in the running time

Pit was one of those films you are desperate to succeed but it just did not get going.
some of the trailers for ? Julia's ceased and another with Hugh Grant in could send a glass eye to sleep.

As the OP in this thread it seems that my misgivings were not misfounded - as to me even the clips looked pretty poor.

Also it was in the can for a really long time before it was given a release. That in itself really rang alarm bells for me.
