I've organized a brand new competition at our place. Got a new trophy paid for by a local company. Free entry to every member that won a competition last season (Champion Of Champions). Notice posted two weeks ago. Facebook notice posted. Free oatcakes with cheese (local delicacy) to every entrant. 44 members eligble. Time slot booked in for comp 9.30am - until 11am.

14 ENTRANTS. Two of those what to play in the afternoon, which is when they always play and won't change their routine for one comp. I'm holding off doing the draw as I've announced it all to a packed clubhouse this afternoon after Captain Scramble.

I will resign, with immediate effect, the day after the comp. if we do not get up to at least 20 entrants.

Nutz to the lot of 'em. I'm done here.

Ahhh, that's better.

At many clubs the Champion of Champions is considered a major trophy and a Board competition...
Sad to see so few enter....

We have a similar end of season comp for all trophy winners and is always poorly supported. I guess if you've won the club scratch trophy then a cup that 15 people are playing for doesn't mean a lot

Have you found out why people aren't entering ?

Is it over the next two weeks as that's school holiday times , maybe a good deal of them cant play that weekend

We have a champions comp every year - about 80 are invited and it's normally only about 30 that's can actually make it

To quit because of it would be a proper flounce !

We have a "Masters" event every year for comp winners (including divisional monthly medal winners) and previous winners and it's invite only. It's 36 holes medal and that does put some off. A shame the OP has made a big effort and the members haven't responded as they should and some are making it difficult by not changing their routine

2 weeks isn't a lot of notice - maybe some aren't even aware? Also maybe people have other commitments outside of golf meaning afternoon is their only option. Looks like you have put a lot of work to in and well done - I'm sure everyone appreciates it - don't take it personally if it takes year or two to get established.

I'm not so sure people do appreciate the effort that goes in to everything. The company that has donated the trophy was up for making a big splash at the club, and I was going to present the trophy afterward to a packed clubhouse. Huh. I misread that didn't I? I'm going to ring the bloke this afternoon and cancel the presentation for afterwards and ask him to attend the end of season presentation when he can present it to the winner then. At least they'll be people there for that.

I understand your frustration. I really do. But I think you just have to accept that people (even those who won a comp during the last year) might have lifes beside the golf course. They might have family members they want to spend time with, they might have other hobbies besides golf (*gasp*) or they might just plainly have jobs that require them to work on certain days ... even the weekend. I think, roughly a third of people entering out of a pool of only 44 is not too bad, to be honest. Also, if golfers in the UK tick anything like those in Germany, most of them would likely want to enter very short notice (or not) depending on the weather forecast, especially at this time of the year. I played in a comp yesterday (kind of a club-internal mini charity for our teams) and up to Friday we had only 30 participants or so. When I got my tee-time on Saturday, suddenly there were 88 people playing. So don't give up on thingt too early. But also don't be mad if people have different priorities. Golf is a hobby, not an obligation.

Not some of the nutters I know!!!!

Can you get emails of everyone who has qualified and try to get a few more that way. We had the masters at my club on sat which is the same as your comp and think we had 46 take part.

At my former club, a similar competition was run but in conjunction with another comp so the whole club could enter the comp on that day but comp winners from the previous year had their scores entered for the champions comp rather than the medal comp that everyone else was in. We seemed to get a decent turn out of past winners using that format.
