Okay guys, seeing as I'm joining my first club I thought I would be as well to finally take the plunge and get a proper set of clubs. I've narrowed it down to either the callaway strata set - http://www.callawaygolf.com/strata-compset-2013-mens-13-piece.html or a set of Wilson CGI 1200's probably with graphite shafts - https://www.affordablegolf.co.uk/product/wilson-1200-cgi-golf-club-set-graphite/

I'm looking for some opinions here on which ones to go for, my heart is saying wilson but the bank is saying callaway ! Or is there another set anybody can think of that would suit a beginner 28 handicap golfer better?

Personally, I'd stay clear of those full sets, and buy 2nd hand. You'll get much better clubs and have the freedom to buy whatever you want, you're not limited to what's in the set. My driver for example, I picked it up on eBay for £35, and although I've not tried the driver in either of those sets, I'd bet that it's significantly better. In regards to what to look for, any Ping G-series driver/wood or iron set will do a very good job, the more recent Callaway irons are excellent, so the X Hots should be pretty cheap and are nice and easy to hit and if the set you buy comes with a Pitching Wedge and a Sand Wedge that'll be enough to keep you going to start, and then whatever putter you like the look of, but can't go wrong with Ping, Scotty Cameron or Odyssey.

Take a look on eBay, might be surprised what you can pick up, and if you buy this way, you're unlikely to be desperate to change them after a short time playing, those full-sets are normally made very cheaply, and don't perform particularly well. If you need any further info about whether something is worth buying, or whether it's "suited" to a higher handicap, post it on here or PM me and I'll be more than willing to help.

Personally for £250 id buy a used set of clubs rather than these. The're not going to be the best quality where quality would be significantly better from a used set at the same price.

If your just starting out in golf then fine, but i guarantee you'll be replacing these by the start of next year.

Just remember, if you're joining a new club then the golf professional there is your friend. Most of them are top blokes that will give you good advice

Agree with going second hand for that budget.

I've been playing a long time and I can count the new clubs I've bought on one hand, mostly specialist wedges. cheaper sets will not be as good and will not hold value either. For example, I bought a mint set of Ping G10 irons a few years ago £299 second hand. Traded them 2 years later for a mint set of the i10's (I should have bought in the first place!) that were in for £320. I got £270 for the G10s against them as they were still salable clubs and the pro knew he could still shift them....probably helped by the i/G 15's being a step backwards but you get my point. Providing the grips are OK, there's very little other than a few cosmetic scratches that can go wrong with clubs only a few years old. Certainly have a gander at the used market before plunging in with new gear. Another advantage is that you can usually try them out before buying if it's a local shop.

Buying new is a real waste of money, the speed at which the price of used clubs comes down. The new model is rarely much different from the old model and clubs generally don't deteriorate much if looked after. I got my irons for £84 and, after some experimenting, which I would have been very wary about doing to new clubs, I have never hit the ball better. Take the advice d get a good used set.

Out of interest how much did you spend tinkering with the lengths of your clubs?

Just bear in mind that there are some dodgy sellers, Ping clubs have serial number which will enable you to verify they are genuine or not.

Hi there, you have a PM regarding your original post.

cheers

I've seen the Wilson one, they look decent enough.

If I was starting out now it would be with those Wilson's and a push trolley.

Unless I could get a set of g10s Inc wood, driver and a ping putter for under 300

Head up to Bishopbriggs Golf Range. They have loads of used clubs and you can try them out too. David is really helpful with club choices. They have a really nice set of Ping G15 irons up there just now. Loads of drivers and woods too, vokey wedges for £40. Well worth a visit.

A friend of mine was in a similar position I pointed him in the direction of Direct golfs ebay shop which often they sell ex demo sets that have a club missing for very little money.
He ended up with a set of John letters T8+ irons that was missing the pitching wedge for £65.00 and bought himself a set of cleveland wedges to replace the missing pitching wedge and a GAP & SW

Been there, got the package set & wishing I hadn't. If I could start again I would go 2nd hand & build up a set.

I have just replaced driver/woods from my package set. I have already replaced the putter. The irons are ok, but I know if I had gone 2nd hand I would have got a much better set.

There is a lot of good stuff for sale here & if you are going to a club, speak to pro. Get advice, maybe a few lessons. Hit some sticks & when you get an idea of what you want, put a wanted post up here. You never know!
