Hi - Newbie to the site here looking for some advice

I've had my current set ten years now (was a starter kit that the missus got me)
Im now looking at spending £250 to £300 to get a new set. I dont need a bag really as have a pretty good new one of them.

Any suggestions on what, where etc and if that is a reasonable amount to spend or should I save up a bit more.

If it helps Im right handed and only 5'8". As a cricketer I tend to go "Extra Cover" rather than "Cow Corner" if anything.

Im a 28er as havent really played that often but intend on trying to get out at least once a week this summer. I'm a member of the Aylesford course at Forest of Arden

Hi,
Not sure if you are better going for a good set of second hand clubs or getting cheaper new ones the first thing to do would be get custom fitted to see if you are standard loft and length, Muzino mx 17's are a easy to hit club that you could get for that type of price range also MD golf are cheap enough and good from what i hear. www.golfbidder.co.uk is a good place to look at clubs they have a good selection have the mx 17's for 130 or the mx19's for 190 which are a really good club for a high handicapper.
Mike.

I'd go to your nearest AG and ask to try out a few sets of cavity back irons and a few sale wood sets - 3 and 5 fairways. Leave the driver for a few months until you get your game on!

Google Orka Golf and you may find a fitter close to you.
Orka make very nice clubs for the likes of you and I.

For that money you will find some cracking deals and cracking kit, dont rush, shop around, but AG is a good place to have alook.

My advice would be to go and try as many sets as possible. If possible hit them on a range so you can see how they fly rather than rely on a machine in a shop bay. I'd suggest a set of cavity backs as they are the most forgiving. Most sets these days seem to come 4-PW or 4-SW which may well be sufficient. There really isn't any need to add a hybrid 3 at this stage.

i don't think you'll find better for the money than these:

£100 off and they're chucking in a lob wedge. i've had these since i started playing in June and can't say anything bad against them.

That is an awsome Deal !!!!!!! These clubs are Extremely good for hi cappers ive heard & read in reviews. i was going to get them if it wasnt for the fact that im a sucker for nike.

Ok - so I've got around to looking and went to my local golf shop and tried 4 7 irons all from the MD Golf range. I got on really well with them all and they have suggested going back to be "customised". Anyone tell me what that entails and what to look out for ? Two of the sets I tried were graphite shafts and two were steel. One of the sets was forged and to be honest with my limited skill I didn't notice a massive amount of difference.

go in with an open mind, and no pre-conceived idea of what you are going to walk back out with. something that may not have entered your mind might feel perfect when you actually hit it, so dont get stuck on something just 'cos it's what you thought you would get on with.

other than that, enjoy it really

Well apart from it being bitter cold, it was good fun. I tried the full range of MD irons and ended up with a set of the Blackhawks with 18 and 21 degree hybrids. In terms of shaft length I came out at standard. Also got a Blackhawk driver which was free with the irons as a promotion :-)

Dying to get out now and have a bash weather permitting
