We used to have a small pond to the right of our 16th green, but for one reason or another they had problems keeping the water in it.
They've tried without success over the last couple of years to redo it properly, so this year they decided to dig it out and replace it with a bunker.

Not a normal sized bunker as the rest of them on our course are. A huge bunker.

I took a couple of photos at the weekend. It shows the size of it well, but until you see it for real you can't really gauge the depth. I'd guess it was about 8' deep! Doesn't sound much but all of the others we have are maybe 2' or 3'.

I can see some of the more fragile members going back to where they last hit from!

That is an awesome bunker!!!

That's the kind of thing I'd love at my track. Our bunkers are only small, but most have a 6ft lip to negotiate.

I find the bigger the bunker the less well mentained they are. people get lazy and don't bother to leave it in pristine condition. expect to land in a few foot prints over time.

big bunkers are so much easier to get out of, plus it's not an automatic penalty that the water hazard was- members should be delighted!

If you want to see deep bunkers get to Woodhall Spa, you'll be spoilt for choice on the Hotchkin course. My personal faves are left of the 4th, left nd right of the 5th and left of the 12th.

The irony of that is, it will probably be flooded most of the year

So from an inability to keep water in something to an inability to keep water out of it!

Occasionally used to play a, now defunct, course down in Kent that had a bunker spanning most of the 9th and 18th greens - a double from memory. It was named 'the Gobi Desert'!

And they don't need to be big o be frightening. At a course in my home town, it wasn't the bunker staring you in the face that was the danger, but the quite small pot one out of sight beyond it!

As for Region's one, that seems like a pretty good attempt at a solution. If it still gets boggy, a lateral ditch past the bunker may help.

I don't know if anyone has played The Addington in Croydon but there is a ludicrous bunker there.
The sand itself is probably only a foot deep but it is at the bottom of a chasm, so you would need to launch it the best part of 30 feet in the air to get it out.

I've played the Hotchkin 3 times and our bunker is nowhere near as bad as a lot of those, but it'll be a nightmare for a lot of our members hahahahahahaha!!!

It was a a bit tongue in cheek TBH but if you think about it, not a lot of water in a pond makes it look empty, the same amount in a bunker causes a flood. It will be interesting to see what happens over winter.

Haha-hahaha... cracking response drive4show.
That bunker reminds me of the Anaconda at chart hills - it is a 200 yard long bunker that runs down the left of a par 5 before intersecting the fairway 120 yards from the green. Faldo designed course, it is excellent - best time to play is after 2:00 in April as the green fee is £40 on a Sunday. Other times it varies from £65-80 (I think).

The one in my pic is a Jack Nicklaus course in South Carolina called Long Bay. Played it a couple of times, great hole :)

We have two of those on most holes. Over the years on old courses the bunkers get bigger. Greenkeeper will keep re-cutting as the edges fall in. We have one on our 7th, that is a least twice the size it started as 100 years ago.

If you want to keep a pond you need a liner. We did that on our first hole, and it is always full of water.
