I've been using the srixon distance balls over the winter months but now the better weather is here I'm looking for a better ball with a bit more spin to hold the greens, not too much though and not too expensive as I do still loose a few too many!! Any suggestions I've been using the ad333 before but thought I'd put it out there for some other suggestions.

Try the srixon soft feel mate. They cheap and cheerful but decent ball.

+1. Nothing wrong with Srixon "Soft feel". Decent ball for this time of year.
Wilson Staff DX3 Soft are a pretty good ball as well. Feel nice around the greens for chipping and putting.

I have been experimenting with balls over the last few rounds and came up with this conclusion

zstars - got free with gm centeneray membership... didnt really get on with them, dont know why, felt ok but nothing out of the ordinary

Nike PD Soft - felt good off the tee, general iron shots, ok for putting

Maxfli Noodle - decent budget ball, ok off the tee and on the green, my best round short game wise was using these although may have been a fluke ;)

Pro V1 - now my fav ball, use for most holes except ones with OB right due to my occasional (every other tee shot) slice, feel great off the putter and around the greens

I am going to get a couple of bags of the prov1 practice balls from direct golf, £10.99 for 24... as a newcomer/high handicapper I doubt I will notice a massive difference between them and brand new pro v's and once I am playing in the low teens I will then move to brand new ones.

Used both the soft feels and the wilson staff dx3. Both perfectly good balls, probably prefer the dx3 out of the 2.

Wouldn't hesitate using them again.

im with smiffy on this one with the DX3, or even the dx2 if you have a slow swing speed. Holtye pro shops is doing 3 dozen DX2 or dx3 at the moment for £30.00. i popped along sunday and grabbed a job lot to see me through this summer and half of next, Evesdad, if you want their details PM me ;)

Without wishing to look ignorant, whats the difference
between the dx2-dx3,Ive never used any of the Wilson brand.
Ive been using the Srixon soft feel for quite awhile now,is there much difference.

dx2 - 2piece ball, one of the softer 2piecers aimed at high teens/early twentys cappers

DX3 - 3 piece ball (like prov) softer than the 2 and spins a bit more, also because its softer it cuts up a bit more.

Your find alot of wilson ball users will use the DX2 during the winter, when they need the distance of the 2 piece, but swap the the DX3 when the greens firm up as they want control into the the greens. There is only one downside too the DX range and that is they can be prone to scuffing quite easy, but at less than £1 a ball who cares. Their FG tour is also rumoured to be a good ball but i havent tried them yet, the dx3 is fine even in the rock hard summer months.

I use the Callaway HX Bite. Nice and long off the tee, but pleasantly soft around the green.

Also, Wilson Staff FG Tour are phenomenal... give me another month, and those bad boys are coming out of hibernation!

Saw something interesting (here or somewhere else) about compression of a ProV1, and how most of us can't swing fast enough to get the true distance out of them.

Not sure how true that is, but I'm not keen on them anyway.

Think that video was a spoof, a ball getting hit at 150mph but it wasn't a real ball. I think lower swing speeds get more out of a lower compression ball, thats about the size of it, I hit around 90mph and use the black numbered ProV1s, not because of any performance off the tee but purely for feel around the greens.

To the OP I'd say go on fleabay and pick up some cheap used balls, you can pick up 3 Bridgestones here, a few Srixons there, it'll cost you a fraction of buying new and in the end you have to be confident with the ball you're using, try as many as you can in real play and if one feels like it's going in the right direction more than others or (more importantly) you feel like you can hole more putts with a certain then that's the one for you. If you fall out of love you can always look around again. Its a confidence game, dont mind what they say on the back of the packet, all the branded balls mentioned here are good performers, its whatever you thinks going in the hole. As it were.

cheers guys so many to choose from!! I def like the srixon soft feel, had a few of those and got on well, will def try the Wilson options as never hit these before. Thanks again for the food for thought!

Decided to ditch my love for Noodles last month (been using Maxfli since they came on teh market - I think) I saw the light when a playing partner let me try a Callaway Tour. Had my first backspin on the dancefloor...ever! It was emotional !
Cant legitimise cost of Tour Balls, so now trialing a couple of cheaper options - Tried Nike PD Soft last weekend and giving Callaway HotBites a go next. Interested in the Wilsons though with the comments above, as the guy in the local golf shop raved about the DX3's (I suspected a sales pitch...but looks like he was just being helpful - haha)

I have tried the trispeed but didn't really notice anything special, let me know how you get on with the callaway balls crawfy as I like the warbirds but not much feel in them.
