I've been struggling with consistency with my irons for a little while, the main problem initially being a heavy fade bordering on slice.

Thinking the problem was me getting too inside on the backswing and then casting over the top on the downswing I have been trying to concentrate on keeping outside on the take away then swinging on an in to out path with limited success. In reality I think this has somewhat exacerbated the inconsistency and resulted in either thinning or duffing it with the occasional sweet strike thrown in.

Decided to bite the bullet and go back to see the Pro I first started with. One adjustment to the position of my right elbow later and all appears right again! :D

Basically he got me to concentrate on keeping the elbow tucked in and lower towards my hip on the downswing. Ths seems to have resulted in me swinging in a more rounded arc on a natural in to out path and getting a massively more consistant contact.

Can't wait to get to Ramsdale tomorrow to try it out for real under the pressure of a round and hope it still stands up!......if it does no doubt I will be crumbling elswhere! don't you just love this sport!

Moral of the story - If you're struggling, get a lesson!

I bit the bullet 2 weeks ago, and went for a lesson. He changed my swing completely, but I'm determined to stick with it, and hopefully have a half decent swing come spring time.........Got another one this afternoon, lets see what else he can muck up. :p

I don't need help to muck things up :D

I've not been playing long enough to ingrain the bad stuff too much, so I'm thinking I will spend the winter trying to ingrain some good stuff with the help of the Pro, probably have a lesson every other week for a few months.

I guess it helps that I find after a tough day in the office the driving range is a great way to unwind

"lesson every other week for a few months".....I think your Pro will be surveying the Barbados catalogues soon.
I'm all in favour of a few lessons to iron out any problems, but I believe that you should then take what you have been taught to the practice ground and practice, practice, practice.

£14 a lesson every other week is £30 a month, I pay more than that in green fee's visiting other courses during the summer.

Usually get down to the range 2 or 3 times a week as well mate, so plenty of practice will be had don't worry about that :)

Thats the beauty of getting a lesson. A pros eye spots it instantly and gives you a reliable fix rather than trying to stumble on something yourself at the range. I hope it holds together under on course pressure but if not I'm sure it'll only take a range session or two to click into place

Lessons are definitely the way to go. I had all sorts of faults ingrained when I went for another lesson. Such as pivoting and an overswing both of which have been sorted out now thankfully but it took many months of hard graft. So stick with it and depending how badly set your faults are should determine how regular your lessons are. I did a block booking of 6 to start with and went every other week so it lasted about 3 months to sort out but you only get out of it what you put in
