8 months out as I couldn't stand swiping at the little white ball nearly 100 times (sometimes more) every time I played... The usual head full of swing thoughts and frustration of knowing you can do it but cant put it into practise lead me to put the clubs away and genuinely consider selling the lot.

Anyway... needing to entertain a couple of my wife's cousins kids one day I said I would take them to the golf range... I never expected this to get my obsession going again... After hitting nearly all of them out of the middle with that amazing feeling you get when you know you have put a good swing on it I couldn't stop laughing... I just said how typical it was!

3 weeks on and a few rounds under my belt I am back here getting any fix I can... If I cant play I am at the range... if the range is closed... I am looking on here or at what I can buy next!!!

This is not going to be good for my bank account I think!

Has anyone else taken a break after being obsessed and then picked it back up again? I told my mate if I could have been bothered to sell everything I don't think I would have ever played again where as now I have put my name down for a weeks golf holiday next year and looking for a new club :-)

I take a break every winter- freezing me nads off while wearing enough clothing to resemble the Michelin man aint my idea of fun.

First hits back at the range are usually of majestic pro standard then its rapidly downhill for the rest of the season:cool:

Welcome back buddy.... I think you should celebrate and buy yourself something pretty........ And really expensive

I agree... I will be spending money by committing to lessons but because I don't get to hold those I think a new putter will be ordered at some point this week.

Tough decision though whether to get the Versa 7 in Black and White or White and Black ;)

I did that, I am 'mid-retirement' right now, left my club and have hardly played in 10 months.... but I played the forum meet at Cooden and put in a 2 over par round (which could/should have been better) spent 3 days with the forum boys at Gainsbourough (which was a right laugh) and just won my first ever trophy alongside Golfmmad - Sods Law.

I don't think it's possible for me to quit no matter how bad I feel physically or mentally, there are just too many great days to be had. Trying to view it more like a casual hobby now rather than a full time passion*

Best putter on this planet

Great that you're back to the game again, it's too enjoyable to go without.

I stopped for 6 years when the kids were small and my last round cost me £500, I only played once in the year, then suspended my menbership. Can't say I missed it that much while I wasn't playing until one day, when we were having a day out in the country, we passed a golf course. I saw people playing and thought "I want to do that" Had to buy all the gear and got back into it fairly quickly. Really regretted stopping, I went from neglecting my family to neglecting me. I think when I went back I got the balance right.

Can't see me ever giving up again. Semi retirement gives me so many more opportunities to play and it's a game almost without an age limit.

How did you do that with no handicap?

Welcome back.

I stopped for about 2 1/2 months earlier this year due to back problems. At the time I wasn't actually sure if I'd play again, not because of the back, but I just wasn't enjoying playing any more. Sounds a bit like yourself too many swing thoughts and taking it far too seriously just spoilt any enjoyment. The harder I tried the worse I got and the less enjoyment I got.

After about 2 months I'd pretty much made up my mind to quit but decided to go up the range one lunchtime and hit a few, no thoughts in my head apart from hitting that little white monster and had a blast.

I vowed to myself that if I was going to start again then play for fun, forget about lessons and swing changes, and just go hit the ball and count em up at the end.

So far so good. Enjoying the golf more than ever. I sometimes still get a little swing obsessed but quickly remind myself why I play the game.

On the same path myself, a few months of not playing but now dipping my toe in the water again, hoping to re-join my old club soon.

Hope your enjoyment stays with you, thats my only aim from now, go out hit the ball, enjoy the day, hope its that simple.

Yep... Definitely hooked!

Last night I saw a video where a pro was analysing a swing sent in and giving advice... Its mad because I don't know why I clicked on it, it wasn't titled as anything interest...

When watching it the pro pointed out a sway during the backswinf... Again didn't give me a light bulb moment... But the second he drew a line and mentioned how the head has moved and the sway is masking the real action in the backswing it just hit me that was my issue.

This was late last night and if a range would have been open I would of been in the car and down the range.

This morning I went and hit a bucket of balls and couldn't believe how well I struck them... Even had the confidence to mess around and hit draws/fades etc (when I actually meant too)

It is mad how everything else in the swing was working and just by realising I was swying and not turning its all good again.... Proof you don't lose it completely... Its just one thing to make everything else not work!

Definitely heading to the range or course tomorrow... Not often you have a week off without anything to do :-)
