We had a Roll-up Medal today - didn't know it was on, must have missed it on the fixture list.
Anyway Fragger thought it would be a good idea to enter - Mmm, hindsight might say otherwise.
Off we went, the front 9 being despatched in good time although some of the golf left a lot to be desired.
Reaching the 10th we found a series of 4 balls in front of us - it was a Ladies Match against another Club. They were not playing particularly fast but then they were not particularly slow either.
But they were not going to let us play through - that was obvious from the 11th tee....

Ok , it was a Club Match. But they had a 2 ball right up behind them for the whole of the back 9. It must have increased the pressure on them as we were waiting 5-10 minutes on every tee and most 2nd shots.
After about 3 or 4 holes of this I could just feel the will to live slipping away and even with the usual banter with Fragger I started to get bored. The lack of enthusiasm was more down to the pace of play than the standard of golf - we both played better on the back 9 and, although I missed buffer by some margin (Fragger just missed unless CSS helps him) I've certainly played a lot worse and enjoyed it more. A round that should taken 3 hours took the best part of 4...nearly 2 1/2 hours for the back 9....

The annoying thing is that the Ladies match started a full hour before us and we caught them on the 10th. The fixture was in the list but on BRS there was no mention of a Match, just some times booked.....
All they had to do was let us through........

All in all a hugely frustrating day - going to drown my sorrows in Stella and have a huge Steak dinner to compensate for my lousy day.

That is all....

enjoy the steak and stella! any matches midweek whether ladies or seniors we now allow 2 hrs behind the last match, and still get close to catching them on occasions!

had the opposite at Bourn yesterday, just me and paddyc, barely saw a sole for the first 12 holes, the 2 groups we did catch let us through at the first opportunity and we were on the patio with a beer in hand well inside 3 and 1/2 hrs from starting - just a shame its not always like it!

we have similar issue with BRS too where we just get a block of Booked times rather than it actually telling us what it is, annoying to have to go to the club diary as well as BRS, ig were gonna use it at least use it fully

I feel your pain! Played your course last week and met a 4 ball on the first tee. We were a 3 ball. Waited on every tee and every shot thereafter with the exception of putts! It became clear we were not going to be let through despite an empty course in front of them. Eventually I stopped getting irritated and then actually quite amused as one guy kept picking up or at least not finshing a hole as he wasn't playing well...I'm sure he'd have taken more time and put another ball down etc if we weren't behind them.

Had a bite to eat afterwards and guy serving asked how our round went and we said fine apart from being held up by the 4 ball on the patio! He said he'd have a word and then asked how long it took "4 hours 10" I replied knowing he'd feel that was ok then - which is what he said.

I just don't ever understand why folk don't let quicker groups through, if possible, as everyone then enjoys their game more.

reading your post it's apparent that the front 9 going at a jolly jaunt by the sounds of it, the golf was crap, you then hit the 4ball and were being held up but your game improved? Now you can read into what you want in this, did it take 9 holes for you to get into your stride or the fact that the slower pace made you concentrate more and hit better/quality shots! Catch 22, but your final statement really says it all, you'd rather go round in 3hrs enjoy playing crap then take longer and shoot a good score? Don't figure!

And I say that where exactly...??
How many lines did you have to read between to come up with that?
What I said was, if you could be bothered to read it, was that I have played worse than I did today but enjoyed it more due to not having to stand around for more than an hour picking my rear-end waiting.......or do you find that entertaining?
Don't you play to enjoy the game as well as shoot a good score??

The front 9 was despatched in good time because we were able to get on with it - how does that become a "jolly jaunt"..?

Is it one of the unwritten laws of etiquette that matches (and societies!) have to stay together and not allow groups through? I've played matches before and called a 2 ball through on the basis that once they've got through my match they might get through the others and at least play freely for a few final holes...

Seems to be the norm though that match groups aren't separated??

Seems to be a bit myth/bit unwritten rule that if youre in a comp/match etc then no point the last group letting anyone through as they wont get through the rest of the groups. I can see if its a packed golf course that this makes sense to some degree but theres other times where a 2 ball should be let through 3 or 4 groups and be gone.

Have to say I rarely will tee it up anywhere near a match these days as just not worth the hassle and cant stand the scenario above

Chill out!

If you didn't want people to post their opinions on your thread then maybe you shouldn't have posted

What you're really saying Imurg is that more than 3 hours in Fragger's company is too much - go on, admit it :D

You might say that Mike...I, of course, couldn't possibly comment!!

great, I have 4 days with fragger in Ireland! ;)
Good luck with that Steve - just listen for the "that's a par" in a Joe Pasquale voice and you'll be as fed up of it as I am...

This is where New Golf Thinking starts to kick in

First 9, out in 51, 3rd shot on our 4th SI 1 165 yards from the pin, duck hooks it into the woods ended with an 8, if playing Stableford would have had 12 points. the odd bad shot got me into trouble

However on the back 9 , I knew we were going to be held up with no chance of being let through, so being mentally stronger than my little Bro  I was able to switch off and compartmentalize the situation and as a result shot 42 on the back (same as Imurg) which would have been 21 or 22 points and included 5 pars.

Looks like im going to end up 1 shot outside buffer unless CSS moves in my favour, so probably a .1 BUT if at the end of the front 9 you told me i'd end up being so close to buffer, i'd have laughed at you. Just need to get it working for an entire round now.

Having said that it was irritating literally having to wait 10 minutes on every tee from the 11th as they had to all finish their 3rd shots before they were out of range, and if we had known there was a match on, we probably wouldnt have entered the medal and may have just played the first 9 twice.

Your body starts to cool, old limbs get a bit stiff and still you are waiting and then your PP starts to lose it :)

and she duffs it another 30 yards

At one point the Ladies in front were described as "The Dementors of the Golf World" as they sucked the enjoyment out of the round, but we thought we shouldnt mention it as fairway Dodger would be on our case.....so we wont :)

Oh I won BTW :)

Know the feeling, had many a good round spoiled by slow play. Last week set off as normal and finished over 1 hour before the group behind us.was watching and all four had long pre shot routines.and we're very slow on the greens.
