Played a Medal this morning, and altho was well up for it, and well relaxed and ready to go, had an absolute shocking start, with a Triple on the 2nd, and had used up 9 of my 10 H/C after 6 holes.

Managed to Par /Birdie /Par the next 3 for a +8 front 9, leaving me no real hope for a reasonable day with the harder back 9 to come.

Low & behold, a +4 gross back 9, with a Par/Birdie finish, left me most definitely in buffer to avoid .1 back.

Strangely chuffed to have salvaged a score. :)

If I have a bad start in a medal or a couple of bad holes etc I mentally change my score to stableford. Then I just aim for 34/35 points. Have avoided a few 0.1's this season even with an NR on the card. Even if you don't manage it doing this gives you a target to aim for on the back 9.

That is a pretty good comeback after the first nine holes. Well done for sticking in there. It's something I've really tried to do (with mixed success) and even if I go out and use all my shots early on I try and make as many pars coming back as I can. In the old days I'd throw in the towel, the head would go down and I'd continue chopping it around. Now at least I feel as though I'm trying my hardest even if the results don't always show that

The key is the old adage of playing one shot at a time. My last competition win (which came about 3 weeks ago whilst playing off 21) saw me triple the first hole. I somewhat wrote the round off and then didn't really worry about scoring. Lo and behold a net -5 score, a competition win and a cut!
