I think the majority of people who visit this forum are more than aware of this fact. One quote in this article sums up the naivety of the author for me -

"Woods is still, by some distance, the biggest name in golf and draws fans wherever he plays. When he eventually returns from injury it will be a very significant story".

Only in terms of celebrity worshippers who also feel that David Beckham is the biggest name in football.

Globally, for sure. I'm not so sure about the UK though. I've never taken much interest, except in the early days.

depends on interpretations I suppose, in terms of marketable image rights yes, again i'll refer to Becks - sells shirts to people who have no idea about the football (not that I would slag him)

Will the open prosper without him? of course. Thankfully no one is bigger than the game.
