Watching the golf and the commentators have been mentioning prizes for Eagles on certain holes.

Marcel Siem yesterday won a Volvo car for holing his 2nd on the 17th.
Today Ross Fisher has just won 500g of gold for an Eagle worth £12,487.
And they also mentioned Tag Heuer watches available.

Not only playing for stupid money every week now big prizes as well.
And they say footballers are over paid.

At least golfers earn those prizes / prize money.

Without going off topic - do you think footballers don't earn their money?

My comment was more along the lines of that golfers have to perform / play well / produce something spectacular to earn big money or big prizes. Whereas a footballer can play rubbish and still take home an exorbitant salary.

Professional golfers deserve every penny or prize they earn. They're incredibly talented, and consistent at a supremely difficult sport, and make it look stupidly easy.

Yep. I've played a whole range of sports over the years and golf is by some distance the most difficult.

Good comment

I didnt look at it that way

I was thinking more along the lines that their name brings in sales in tickets, shirts, other merchandise which often far outweighs their salary. They also have to do a lot behind the scenes, which we often don't see.

But your right, a golfer who doesnt perform for a year probably wont make a living, whereas a footballer could have a shocker for a long time and still pick up a cheque

Even a pretty average player in the Premier league is earning about £50k a week with the top players earning over £200k.

Personally I don't see how anyone can say they are worth it.

I agree they are not worth it but they have a limited number of years to earn enough for a life time, golfers can now play the seniors tour for good money aswell ,

Footballers can fill stadia of 50/60even 100 thousand people week in week out , not the handfull that watch most golf tournaments excluding the majors

But again i do agree they are not worth it

True and I agree with your points but put it into perspective....

A footballer earning £20k a week for 10 years earns over £10m pounds. If he can't invest that wisely to set himself up for life then he is a complete numpty.

Or look at it another way....... the Prime Minister earns £142k a year for running the entire country. He is also a complete numpty

All sports stars ( majority in high profile sports ) are overpaid but the demand is there and that allows them to be paid very handsomely

Nicklaus and Palmer I understand were two of the highest earner golfers last year

My mistake putting my final paragraph in I certainly didn't want it to turn into another
boring argumentative thread about football.

Back on track about golf if you please.

I have watched golf for years now and I cant remember anyone mentioning prizes
for eagles.
Is this new?

It's a new one on me, guess they wanted to be different. The Volvo car eagle prizes are on par 4's aren't they? so pretty rare. Are they dishing out prizes for par 5 eagles too?

Guess they have to do something to encourage the players to come to the event at a time of year when many are having some time off.

I guess it may be for this competition only. To try and persuade golfers to be a bit more aggressive etc

At the Masters they have always given out some commemorative crystal for eagles but they don't have any monetary value as such.

There has never been a hole in one at the Nedbank in 30 years plus. I suppose they want to give a few extra prizes away, so eagles qualify.

Players have been winning pieces of crystal at the Masters for years for any eagles scored.

A hole in one is just a particular form of eagle, mostly governed by luck, and the prizes are much more valuable. Makes a bit of sense to split the pot a bit more toward the skill element.

That being said, if these prizes are only on 400+ yd par 4s then bye bye skill:rolleyes:

fair play to them! like everyone has mentioned, if they dont perform, they dont earn! Have a read of Poulters book, when he was on 100 quid a week, love him or hate him, its a really interesting insight on what goes on and the sacrifices you need to make to be in that top 0.1%
