Living in Brum, our nearest links course is a couple of hours away......

Anyway I'm heading south next week to play my first round on a links course. I've picked up a few pointers from different videos, mainly from Mr Crossfield.

So, I was wondering if you guys might provide me with some amateur tips for getting round a links course.

I look forward to your suggestions.........

Take care of the wind direction... Lack of trees often mean wind plays a big part. Keeping it low is useful and low chip shots are often the safer option over a high pitch /flop. Good luck!

Cheers VMan!! I chip shot was one of the key things I have picked up. Will be heading to the practice facility over the weekend to touch up this area of my game!

Only played two links courses and there was lots of blind shots (sand dunes in the way) so a course map is a must IMO. Then as above be aware of wind, low shots and I really struggled with rock hard fairways and lightning greens.. actually I just really struggled with links golf and keep out of the gorsey looking stuff !

Check the distance markers. Often may give distance to front of green rather than middle, but with links you should be playing short to let it run on. Play to the middle and your ball will go over the back!

Ive only played links once and i thoroughly enjoyed it. Will definately play some more links golf next year. Where are you playing for your first outing?

Had my first links round in the summer while in Scotland, awesome. One of the most fun rounds I've ever played. Beware the wind. Creamed a driver 150 yards and a 7i 248!

I look forward to your suggestions.........

No Lob wedges...

Learn the 30-50 yards chip with a hybrid... (or 7 iron)

Don't fight the wind... relax and hit your best shot even if it only goes half the distance...

Stay out of the rough.. (Yes, that might take some prayers in all honesty....)

Enjoy! :)

OP here. Cheers guys for all the tips.

I'm heading to my driving range which has grass bays and a big short game area so I will be able to practice all the things you have mentioned! I'm playing down at Weston Super Mare GC, so I will post a review once I'm back!!

Enjoy the different environment.

Don't try to beat the wind - it'll win every time. Swing easy - into or across the wind the ball will go lower; with the wind straighter
