Nearest pin - wben to measure?

Played in a bb stab recently and measured my shot as soon as I got on green but later wondered if that was bad form. Was about 2m and other 3 had not hit green.

Should I have waited for others to hit their second shots or not?

Why do you need to measure your shot?

Clearly if you are going to step on their line when measuring then wait.

Wouldn't have been stepping on anyone's line but if they chipped right and long I would have stepped on the line of their return putts but many golfers would already have stepped there. Just seemed the quickest thing to measure it that way but did wonder afterwards if it was the done thing and whether I should have waited until others were nearer hole or had holed out.

If I need measure nearest the pin I do it after putting out having marked the ball position a couple of putter heads away. This way I'm concentrating on my putt and not stepping on my line, or anyone else's.

overthinking it, if you were the only one on the green, you werent stepping on someones line and in effect were helping to keep things moving then you were spot on imo

The etiquette in the professional game is not to step on the line either side of the hole. A good thing to adopt.

Makes sense to wait until everyone is on the green (or at least you can identify which of the group qualifies)! That way you only need to measure the closest, as opposed to maybe measuring 4! Whether you measure before or after they've putted is their/your choice!

I'd wait until everyone had chipped/putted onto the green. That way you know where to walk
