Nats problems - London Airspace closed

J
It's what happens when you put all your eggs in one basket in the interests of 'greater efficiency', especially if a computer system is involved!
:mmm:

Been a lot less failures and issues since the Airspace control moved to Swanwick.

Eh! There were loads of problems during the first year or so! It has been a lot better more recently, at least up to today!

And there were daily problems before It switched to Swanwick due to the infrastructure and age of equipment and multiple airports around the country including military airports.

But at least every airport in the country didn't go down at the same time!

But we had half the flight travel in the air and the infrastructure at the time couldn't handle anymore traffic.

The template that is used within Swanwick is used all over the place - as with everything in the world nothing is full proof - but it's a great deal better than when I was working on the radars and the displays.

Are you saying that now that you aren't working on the radars and displays, it's a great deal better?

Certainly been a lot better (or at least less visible) since the 'teething problems' were sorted out though. And that situation was mainly due to political/contractual pressure. The reported 50 systems and 4M lines of code is a pretty small, if maybe not simple, setup though. London airspace is right up there as the most crowded, so plenty of 'stress' on it and with only a week or so until the most critical period of the year! I wouldn't be surprised if a change wasn't the cause.
