My heart goes out to the people affected by the fires in Portugal, they have just declared 3 days of national mourning. Many country's do this after disasters but we in the UK don't as a rule.
Why do you think this is.

Well I must say, a thought provoking question a which makes a change from some of the Rammel questions on here and I honestly don't know why?

I think it's because we have a "let's get on with it" kind of attitude..
Obviously it's bad when these things happen but all that's really needed from Joe Public is a few moments of reflection and then carry on.

They want to do a massive one for the Queen, like 12 days. Likely think if they call one before that it would be seen by powers that be to diminish hers despite being into her 90s. This is how our country and class-based society works be that right or wrong. Portugal respect all their people.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

The good old stiff British upper lip. Good question about what it entails? Never really considered it. Funny that we as a nation can have a day off when Charles and Di married but when there is a huge national disaster we do nothing.

But we do do something, we carry on. People die all the time and for those involved it is traumatic. The rest of the world carries on though and I think that helps with the grieving process.

When Will and Kate got married I played golf. I'll be doing the same for the next royal marriage or funeral. Anything but sitting in front of the tv watching it.

Depending on the circumstance, I have to hold my hand up and say the golf course was going to be my preferred option although being a royal club I'm not 100% we'd be open if it was something to do with the royal family (as a "mark of respect" no doubt)

Really can't compare a (what some people consider) joyous celebratory event with street parties up and down the country and a massive uplift for business's with souveniers etc and a huge national disaster, we will have a moment of remembrance and hopefully provide the care and attention the victims and their families need,

I take your point and totally agree but having not experienced a day of mourning (unless I'm missing something with the fading memory) and only those granted for royal weddings. Totally polar opposites of course. If, there is one following a death (assume this will be the queens death), would we all be expected to sit around and do nothing but watch it on TV. Of course everything will be shut like Christmas day. Is there anything other than a death of a monarch that anyone thinks would justify a day of mourning in the UK or is the "carry on" mindset exactly what you'd want to see

Princess Diane's funeral the Country virtually closed down, shops and business's didn't open till 11-11:30 after her funeral.

The Queen will lie in state in the Palace of Westminister for 7 days for people to file past and pay their respects (similar to what happened for Queen Mother) and the day of the funeral, I believe, will be a day off, last one was 1952 and Country came to standstill, but again, it was a different Country back then.

I was playing a Medal........😮
I was driving on way to holiday, left at 5am and all motorway service stations were shut apart from garages for fuel only, shelves were covered up till 11am.

I am a bit odd when it comes to public tragedies and celebrations, I have been through a lot of sadness and emotional stuff over the years and so these days when public things that happen whether happy or sad I don't get the emotion.

That said I can watch some films I have seen many times before and be in floods of tears. I am a bit weird.

It's 2017 - surely it's enough to change your Facebook profile page with an associated logo ...... ;)

In other countries there will be those who mourn openly, and maybe need a day to grieve, and there will be those that go and play a Medal.

Princess Diana's death, and countless tragedies since, show we are not an uncaring nation. Do not those that wear their heart on their sleeves not need a day to reconcile their feelings?

Why don't we have national days of mourning? Stiff upper lip and the British thing! Rollox! Or is it that we are so brainwashed we "keep calm and carry on" so as not to hurt big business? How often do we hear a day lost is £10bn?

Sorry but I feel like we should have a day to reflect on the fragility of life and how precious it is. And I do feel that the country is too business like.
