I've played quite a few courses across the UK. Though never quite enough yet imo, but I have notices a few stuck out in my mind as courses that I would happily play for many years if I lived there as their rates were good the courses were excellent & they had a warm welcoming atmosphere.

So heres my List...

So far....

Axecliff @ Seaton. Devon
Royal St David's @ Harlech. N Wales
Nefyn @ Morfa Nefyn. N Wales
Wensum Valley @ Norwich. East Anglia
Penrhos @ Llanrhystud. Mid Wales
Bude & North Cornwall @ Bude. Cornwall

There are a number of clubs I have not played but am interested in playing that could fit the criteria around the country. Most of these are coastal tracks.

There are of course plenty of courses if the fees were more accessable I'd happily be a member of & stay there, but this is not the case. Its a sad fact that often the closser courses we'd rather be members of are financially out of reach to most mere mortals & this increases the transient nature of many.

So what courses around the country that you know you'd pay the fees they charge would all you join...?

I am more than happy at my current club, Ranfurly Castle. There are numerous clubs that I would love to become a member of such as Loch Lomond, Spey Valley, Gleneagles etc, however they are either at the other end of the country to me or financially out of my reach!!

I guess since I have been a member of my club for 8 years, and have no current intention of leaving I would nominate West Herts Golf Club in Watford.

I like playing The Grove, but it is a golf course, not a golf club.

Same with Moor Park.

I would happily stay a memeber of my home club, Whipsnade Park, although a bit pricey I like the course and the other members, plus the pros great aswell. :D

Been a member of Brough Golf Club here in East Yorks for 20yrs, and have never tired of playing it, beautiful established tight parkland course.
It dries quickly, looks fantastic, and Clubhouse is fab too, very traditional.

Nowhere else locally I'd even consider moving to.

As a fan of links golf, there are a few in my neck of the woods I'd happily stay a member of-

Gullane
North Berwick-either course
Archerfield
Craigielaw

A wee bit further away but the best course in St.Andrews, Kingsbarns

If I really had to choose, it would be Gullane.Three outstanding courses in a lovely setting.

Tough question this, I love royal county down and would play it every day given the chance but I wouldnt join the club, there are lots of fatastic courses with club having the unenviable task of living up to the quality of the course.
I happy where I am now, its just a pity I cant play in more than one place at once though as we have dozens of testing and scenic courses within a 40 mile radius.

My list wouldn't be much different from the value courses thread a coupld of weeks back.

Boat of Garten, Speyside
Kirrimuir, Angus
Ballater, Aberdeenshire

Ones that I couldn't afford/wouldn't get into:

Loch Lomond
Gleneagles

Agree with Smiffy about Crowborough Beacon, although have never been a member, but they've hosted some ladies' stuff. Longish par three over water sticks in my head, green tucked in with woods on the lhs...might be wrong and quite possibly an entirely different golf course!
But Canterbury suits me nicely thank you very much. Designed by Harry Colt (Wentworths) lots of gorse, elevated tees, side slopes. Calls for a full bagful of shots.

I love Royal Ascot and can see me being there for years. The course is still maturing year on year and you can really start to see its full potential now. The clubhouse atmosphere is always good and you are always certain fo a friendly welcome.

I agree that Bude & North Cornwall has always been a very friendly place the times I have been down there. However of all the clubs down that way the friendliest was a place called Holsworthy. We got rained off after nine (we shouldn't really have started at all it was that bad) and with lightnin in the air called it a day. When they heard of our plight, they arranged a free plate of chips and a beer each.

Now that's what I call friendly...

Holesworthy you say...

Well, that's another to add to list of places to go & play.

Ive been a member of a few over the years through moving around a bit mainly but sometimes through moving from a crappy club to a good one. I would have been happy to stay at the following because of course quality, membership quality, or both.
Laceby Manor.
Forres.
Sennelager.
My current club of course(look forward to staying here)

If Branston offered me the rates I could easily afford to pay then I'd play there & stay there as a club member. Infact I would have joined as a full member a long time ago too. Hence my other threads idea for town residents within a certain distance of the club entrance fee of fees.

That sounds very much like the 6th.
But the "water" you have to go over isn't a pond, it's a small stream at the bottom of a "ravine" which is covered on both banks by longish bracken and ferns. Another bomb hole full of crap to the left of the green. Two ways to play it....either fly it all the way and hope the green is receptive enough to hold it, or play to the right a little bit short and let the slope take it round onto the green. Trouble is, there is a furrow to the right of the green which sometimes stops your ball running down. Depends on how short the greenkeeper cuts the grass! A terrific par 3, could hold it's own on any course in the world and is called "The Speaker".

Living "well south", I'd say almost any course I've played in Scotland but of those that really stand out for friendliness of welcome at a good track I'd say Craigielaw & Prestwick St Nicholas.

But to follow Homer's example - West Linton. Was thundering & lightning in the distance when we started, but heavens opened halfway down the first. Half the course was under water by time we finished the hole and lightning was directly around so we legged it to the clubhouse. Was in the bar watching the rain when the secretary (?) came to find us and offered us back our green fees. (But said that if we waited, course would be playable half an hour after the rain stopped - even though the greens visible from clubhouse were totally under water. We dcided to wait - and had a cracking afternoon)

OMG really , I live very near this course and the owner is a distant relative and I have to say it is regarded as a joke locally. The course usually is in terrible condition so you must have been very lucky when you played there. All the bloke is interested in is making money with absolutely NO regard for his members or the courses.
Someone asked if the bunkers could be raked and the edges trimmed to smarten them up a bit...2 days later he had his subscription cheque back and was told to never come there again...sums it up tbh
