I was lucky enough to play Nairn with a historian of the club and a golf writer.

He managed to get a 9:00 am tee time and at the rate of £10 for a members guest so I was lucky enough as it is! But to have the knowledge of a wise member who could give me lines and advice was priceless. However, because I got there at cutting it a bit fine I dashed off so I can't comment on anything other than the course!

Nairn I have felt in the past has recieved mixed reviews certainly on Top100GolfCourses.co.uk, however I cannot see why. It is a sublime links with variety and challenge aplenty. Plus the famous greens, which I was told were in bad condition compared to normal and yet they were still the best I putted on all week!

The only criticism I could have would be that the 13th is so distinctly out of character with the rest of the course it is staggering. However, it is not a bad hole, in fact a very good and tough one.

I managed to hit a round of +9 which was helped by my second ever eagle at the Par 5 18th to finish, without doubt the highlight of my round!

Here are some pics…

We played it last year during the castle stuart weekend. I agree the 13th is a strange hole for the course. I managed to get a plugged ball on the 14th on that grassy mound in front of the green which really surprised me for a links course. I left feeling that it was the weakest of the three courses we played that weekend (Spey Valley, Castle Stuart and Nairn).
The course to me was very flat and bland (my opinion, many will not agree), at the time of playing a lot of gorse had been burned/removed and looked worse for it, the greens were nothing special a the time though this was late april and hardly out of winter. I did like the 16th hole, that photo summed up the approach view nicely with those bunkers foremost on your mind. The 18th could be a great hole if it had more features and a more hazardous approach to the green.
