After receiving a message from Ian on Sunday morning saying course still open, I had to wonder why he had sent such a strange message when in Bangor where I live the sun had been shining from virtually sunrise.
It turns out there had been some snow but had melted very quickly. I headed up to Massereene GC to be met with this fine sight, blue skies!

After meeting and saying hello, we headed to the 1st tee.
Having played the course twice before I thought I would remember most of the way round....wrong!
We paired off for a match playing high lows. Ian (bunkersave07) and Scott vs Steve (smange) and myself.
The first couple of holes were a bit of a blur for myself as I managed to almost loose my first two tee shots each time going too straight and too far rather than laying up.
So the game was up and down and soon we all started to lift our games a little, Ian most notably barely missing a putt including draining one putt from off the green for a nice 2 towards the end of the first nine.
Scott battled with his driver having sent a few to the right but was still scoring well meaning we had to score better than par to win holes, this just didnt happen often enough for our liking. Through out the day there were tiny flurries of snow which was strange as the sky was blue, talk about 4 seasons in one!!

Scott prepares to hammer one.

Come the turn of the nine, Steve and myself were 1 down and really struggling on the greens while Ian virtually single putted his way round only missing the occasional putt due to recently spiked and treacherous putting surfaces.
Having been 1 up at one point we managed to lose another hole early into the back nine and the game although windy wasnt proving impossible to hit greens in regulation, only the odd stray drive slowed us down as we flew round the remaining holes. having gone 3 down and holes running out fast both myself and steve knew the writing was on the wall as Scott took full advantage of his shots and made it difficult for us, scoring pars were just not good enough and finally the game was over on the 16th with a fine half from scott.
Steve Ian and scott check out their putts.

After finishing out on the 500 yd par 5 final hole for par, I shook my partners hand and commiserated with him and congratulated Ian and Scott on a match well won.
We retired to the club house for Burger and saute potatoes and a pint.
A rematch has already been mentioned and Scotts home course of Edenmore in Moira has been agreed. Hopefully with similar weather and more forgiving greens!
The only consolation I have is that it wasnt all in vain, Ian now has to buy a new driver as per one of his previous posts regarding drives. :D
Well done Ian and Scott.

I have only got photos of the three other fellas as Ian took pics also and Im sure will post them up when he gets a chance to upload them.

Great pictures if it wasnt for the waterproofs you would think it was the middle of summer.Course looks great too. :)

Steve, only eejits wear waterproofs, when the rest of the pics come out, you will see that I braved the sunshine in only a tshirt and jumper.

Excellent Picture's Brendy. We all seemed to really enjoy the game and the course. Next time you play my course, the greens will be like carpets.
The camera never lie's. I was wondering what I was doing in that bush, thanks for telling everyone. Scott whispered to me on the way round that this match was a bit easy, (joking).
I knew by some of Smange's post he was a bandit and with a bit of practise he could be down to as low as 10 (I think anyway). Brendy you hit a lovely draw in your shots, I could see that you can play off a lower handicap. As I'm sure you could see I could play off a lot higher handicap.
May is a busy month for internal matches and there are a few in June aswell, but I'm sure we will get another game arranged sometime. Cheer's lads for the nice comments you all had about my course and our club house I think my course is by far one of the best inland courses in Northern Ireland.
I shall be up loading my picture's sometime, as my son has taken it away on holiday with him.

Grub was lovely Ian, havent had a burger like that in a while!
Steve should be playing a little lower definately, his driving is fine, the only advice I could think off is to try to get the ball first, turf second as a couple fat shots were his only weakness that I could see.
If you keep putting as you do Ian, the odd green missed means nothing, up and downs are king to all low handicappers and are the sole difference between a good round and a great round.
Scott played fairly solidly to his handicap also and only one or two wayward tee shots and a wood left hims with a bit of work to do from what I could see.
Myself, well my first two holes totally killed off what could have been a far better round. 10 pars and no birdies just arnt good enough for me at the moment, my sense of touch on the greens went awol at a very early stage, otherwise I was reasonably happy with my driving (most of the time) and my longer irons especially with the fairly stiff winds at times.
As I said, I enjoyed every hole, even if I was giving myself a hard time occasionally.

Hi guys.
Some great pics there Brendy.
Really enjoyed the day, as well as the company Massereene is indeed a very fine course and i would recommend it to anybody visiting the area. Im not going to blame the greens for my poor performance with the putter as there was nothing wrong with them when Ian was knocking in putts from all distances with unerring accuracy. I lost count of how many greens you one putted Ian. We have to do it again soon and hopefully more forum members can make it.

Had a great time, the course was in good shape. That wind was something else. Well I did get a new driver (Cleveland XLS 9.5) so we'll have to see if it helps.
Any time you wish to get together at my course let me know and it will be taken care of.
see you all around the links

Good man yourself, Ill bet the tee shots just get better now (not much wrong with the good ones already!), You did say you were after teh xls walking up the 16th I think it was, so even just for the mental game you are already better off!

Top post.....great pictures......were you hiding in a "copper" beech at the first? That'll be the spam "detective" in you.....

Nice to see even better coverage than the Masters. (only joking GM!)

Taken from the second carpark overlooking that and a couple of other holes, just before I met up with the three big fellas.
The hedge was only around 5-5 1/2 feet tall so was quite a good foreground mixing in a little colour.
