Hitting some balls this evening trying to work out why the hell him almost hooking the ball. All of my irons are landing left of target and my woods going WAY left unless I weaken my left hand. Im thinking it’s a right hand release?

It’s obvious I’m coming over the top but it’s not as bad as it has been, so not too worried about that at the moment, I just want to get back to hitting greens every now and again!

Sorry about the rushed message HID is cooking my dinner. Would be great if anyone had some slow mo gear to slow it down and look at my release?!?!?!

Thanks in advance.

I tried to capture a few shots but failed as either a) there aren't enough f.p.s. on your video or b) you swing it so fast youtube can't cope!!!

If your divots are straight and the ball starts straight, why not tweak your grip a little. A nudge weaker or stronger can make a big difference.

I'm no expert (that's the usual disclaimer out the way :D) and don't have slow-mo software, but from trial and error clicking pause on your videos, I noticed a couple of things.

On the view from behind, at the top of your backswing the clubface is facing the sky, which I think means it's closed about 20 degrees.

On the view from the front, it looks to me like you have a strong grip, the ball is a little far back in your stance, and trying to pause it at impact (got it a fraction after) it looks like the clubhead overtakes your hands.

I still wouldn't want to play you for a fiver though :D

Hopefully an expert will be along to either tell me I'm wrong or offer fixes :)

And I'm glad his my partner. Now if I can just find a game to compliment his we'll be in business this year. To be honest though he hasn't played well (or to his own standard of well) for a few weeks and lost the plot through tiredness, hangover and slow play on Saturday. He did however manage 40 points from 17 scoring holes against TonyN and RGUK last week and he didn't hit it great there. I think sometimes he gets a bit "Homeresque" and worrys about the swing and not belting it miles, chipping on (that usually all thats left) and making the putts. If anything its the flat stick that needs the work.

I'm not sure if this a ploy for a possible bad round on a new course on Friday, an attempt to make me feel better or a real swing issue. I'm thinking some from column A and a smidge from column C

Divots are always straight (ish) but tail off to left at end. Will have a go at a weaker grip at the range tomorrow.

Didn’t expect such positive feedback, all I can see is the reverse pivot with way too much head movement and not dropping the club enough into the inside on the downswing.

and trying to pause it at impact (got it a fraction after) it looks like the clubhead overtakes your hands.

That's the problem.

Stop hitting the ball with your hands in front of your willy! Your hands should be by your left thigh at address and in front of your left pocket at impact.... with the clubhead trailing behind some 20cm.

Your club has got out in front of your hands (swingpath pretty straight but club pointing left)

Once your hands stop swinging through properly the clubface comes round and ends up pointing left before you've even hit the ball. It screws the swingpath and the direction the clubface is pointing.... hook!

Think along the lines of 'leaning the club into the ball' at address and through impact. Try 5°, then 10, then 15 until you find something you are comfortable with. Mine is about 30° at impact (well that's how it feels to me)... I'm hitting that ball into the GROUND!

If we can get you off that back foot then you'll have a proper swing ;)

(can you see how the position on the right looks a lot more powerful (yellow line).. and the ball wouldn't have even been hit yet)

Grip looks fine. Ball position looks fine too (for an 8-iron).

If I may (?) the fantastic 4 nett 3's were the body blow in our attempt to overturn the Homer/HTL machine.

The key is consistency and avoiding the bad shots (as if we don't already know).

My feeling is *if* a player can hit a good ball, then patience and work eventually pays off.

As for the hook, now that JOuk has posted some food for thought, I reckon it will come.

If you get desparate, I've got a high-speed video camera you can perhaps borrow...shouldn't be too tricky to arrange.

I tend to agree with something Region3 said, in that at impact, (or fractionally after), your hands are directly central, but the clubhead is already level with your left foot. I don't know if this is that bad a thing though.

Always nice to know that someone else has been stung by Hywel :D

Not stung exactly, Hywell played great on the most important holes and therefore we couldn't close out the match. They'd never have won, we'd never have won.....it was that kind of match. Glad to have halved it and not bothered with play-off holes.

Great swing, & great weight shift....

Im no expert but the clubface looks shut through the back swing. Make sure the toe of the club is pointing at the sky when the shaft is horizontal on the way back.

I have been having the exact same problem. Have a look at this from a recent lesson and see if it helps you out.

I like the position on the right a lot. The one on the left sucks big time as you are going to get stuck behind the ball and hit fat/thin shots all day... yet that's the one your pro wants you to do???

You should try to hit the impact bag with the SHAFT, the problem is that you are seeing it as a big ball and trying to hit it with the clubface.

If you combine the one on the right (eyes over the ball) with the impact position on the left then you've got yourself a decent swing....a bit like this....

Quite hard to see it properly when you try and stop the vid at the right places.

For me, the following don't seem to be just right.

1) Ball position, from front view vid, this appears to be slightly right of centre, maybe too far back?
2) Clubhead overtakes hands as per JOUKs thoughts
3) Very little rotation through the ball. Rotation seems to be a secondary action after the ball has been struck as a means of getting the club to the finish.

Best bet IMO would be to go get a lesson to let your pro cast his eye over it all.
