Hello, I’m Dave from Leeds. I’ve been lurking on this forum for the past month and thought it’s about time I joined and said hello. I bought a set of Dunlop clubs three years ago and have been hacking around with them for 6 or 7 games per year.

In August of this year I decided that I wanted to improve my game so started taking lessons. I’ve had two lessons so far and my instructor has completely altered my grip, stance, posture etc.

I’m currently shooting around 120ish so I have a lot of room for improvement! I think I need to spend a lot more time on the practice ground before I go out on the course again. I’m a very inconsistent ball striker. Some shots are reasonable and others will top the ball and it’ll only travel 20yds.

My plan is to work on putting (cut down on the 3 putts) and chip putts around the green. I’ve also just bought a used Callaway X-22 6 iron to see if I’m more consistent with it than my Dunlop 6 iron. If it is a vast improvement I’ll save up and get fitted for some new GI irons.

Looking forward to joining the discussions here and I’m sure I’ll be able to learn a lot.

Dave.

Welcome Dave, your journey into golf is a familiar one, many of us started by hacking about the odd weekend and then deciding they'd like to get better at it. Having lessons and spending time at the range will help you hit more consistent shots and enjoy your round of golf more, no question. If you can afford it maybe ask the pro to give you a putting/chipping lesson too, they often do "on the course" lessons where they play 9 holes with you and they are really good for a look at your all round game. As for the higher quality GI irons you probably will see an improvement, you'll get plenty of advise on here when the time comes and you probably don't need to buy new so it isn't as big an outlay as you think.

It drives us all mad but we wouldn't be here if we didn't absolutely love it (at least some of the time).

Get involved!

Welcome Dave. The number of Leeds based golfers has dramatically increased over the last 8 years, since Leeds come unstuck........don't fancy the rugby, instead.:whoo:

thanks for the welcome. went to the practice ground for an hour today and couldn't hit squat. :( kept topping the ball or hitting it off the toe of the club. I've booked another lesson in a couple of weeks time when my instructor gets back from his holiday so hopefully can get it sorted out.

Hello mate, welcome to the forum.
I had something similar a few weeks ago. A tip I was given that seemed to work was to get a bucket of balls and start really slow, literally just taking a putting stroke, then building it up from there, quarter swings, a third, half swing etc etc.

Had a lesson yesterday and my instructor gave me a similar drill to do when he noticed a few slices creeping in. Legs together, short swing with just arms and shoulders, we then slowly increased the swing till it was a full one. This seemed to really help as did his pointing out that I move my spine position up during the swing. When I concentrated on keeping my head and spine position intact throughout the swing my shots really improved.

Welcome Dave, your in the same ball park as me. 120ish..
I'm off for a lesson Saturday. Had 1 last year for grip, posture etc, has me a lot.
As long as you enjoy the game, and don't get frustrated as I do when your losing
nearly 10 balls a round :D
