First post so a bit of advice from you guys would be most welcome!

I currently play of 15 (was 24 six months ago) so coming down at a nice rate! I have one wood (driver) in my bag and two wedges - PW and SW -

My dilemma is should my next purchase be a 3/5wood (I hit a driver about 230-250 yards and my 3rescue/hybrid 200yrds)

Or

A gap wedge - I hit a sand wedge 80-90 yards and my PW 115-125 yards -

My initial thought is Gap wedge as this will have a quicker effect on my scores?

Any thoughts?

Hey up,
It all depends, I am of the mind that kit sandwedges (the one that comes with the rest of the irons) is not always as effective as say, the Titleist Vokey or MD Seve/Norman Drew or Mizuno or Clevland tour action wedges.
Does your game lack anywhere in particular? a 5 wood could be your best friend if you can't get an iron 200 yards but a driver is too much. Then again, perhaps a couple of lessons would leave you not needing any more clubs, my guess is a 5 wood and or a milled 56 degree Sw.

I agree with Brendy regarding both clubs.

Do you struggle on long par 4's & par 5's ? If so you may need to get a fairway wood to help with distance from the fairway.

How good is your short game?

I'd be more likely to suggest looking at a fairway wood for the simple reason that when you look at a standard set of clubs you normally get:
driver, 2 fairway woods, 3 iron to s/w , and a putter

Someone, sometime, decided that this was what was needed and most manufacturers have stuck to that ever since.

How close to this is your set?

Thanks,

with regards to my SW i have never used anyhting else! I do hit the one i have (which i found in my dads loft) well and it seems to do what i want. At some point i will replace it but not now i think.

The 3 iron goes nicely but obviously there is a gap between my logest iron and my driver. As you mention all full sets come with 2 fairwaywoods at the moment i have none!

Par 4s over 420 yards i strugle in reach in regulation but par 5 i tend to reach in three without a problem.

From 170 yards out i like to think i am pretty acurate untill i have to change the tempo of my swing and hit a soft PW or hard SW when i am around 90-110 yards away. Hence my thinking of a Gap wedge

I think the sets that have 2 fairway woods tells a story though!

Of course i can always get both clubs!

It surely comes down to budget. There are some stonking deals around at the moment. For example you can pick up a Titleist Vokey wedge for £50 and a Ping G10 for about £120.

Some decent kit for not alot of dough.

As others have said it really depends on where your strong points and weak points are if you're limited to just one club.

MD are making some good clubs, and aren't the same price as your big brand names.

Budget depending you could get two clubs for the price of just one bang up-to-date model.

Just a thought really.

I'd certainly look at the MD wedges. Personally I think you'd be better off getting a set of wedges to complement the PW in your set that are matched so that you can get some consistancy in terms of feel and distance. I'd go for a 52 and a 58 in addition to my PW

If you want to splash the cash on a long club, I can send you a once-used MacGregor Gap Wedge (52*) for pocket money.
Lovely forged club, but not spin milled.......
