On December 19th last year, on this very forum, I posted this about which DMD you have and why...

Laser because it's simple and gives me the yardage to whatever I want. There have been occasions when it would have been nice to have GPS for the hazards but not often enough to want to change. Most of the time there's a tree or marker post I can point my laser at

Now here we are 4 months later, I've just taken my new G5 for it's first nine holes and I can't believe how wrong I could have been. GPS is the way forward, it's verging on cheating it really is. If there is anyone out there not sure whether to buy one or not, do it, you won't regret it.

You are on a different wave length to me today Hawkeye. I have ditched my Shotmeiser GPS as it was not worth the bother, and got myself a basic watch that just gives me front middle and back yardages. Nice and simple and all a hacker like me needs.;)

Front and back distances are fine for me until inside about 90. Then I want exact, so Laser or pin sheets work best for me.

I carry both and today went out without my GPS and it was a pain to laser a ditch/hazard/landing spot/lay up when a glance at the GPS would have done it much more quickly. Not helped that the new course doesn't have the best of 150/100yd marker posts. If I can see the flag and judge how far on it is then the GPS is ideal but if I can't then I like the laser for accuracy close in.

Thinking of going down this route too.

Might look out for a cheap one.
The Bushnell stays but sometimes it can be tricky working out distance to the front etc.

If you can afford it a combination of both is perfect. I use the laser but at times I require a GPS at Machrihanish whem the greens are in punch bowls or hidden by dunes etc.

SC SGX does what I need. I am not worried about exact distances as I'm simply not accurate enough - YET. I can move the flag on the device to the approximate location and take the revised distance from there. Good enough

I love my G5 now.

I agree with Craw, if you can afford both then a combo is a must but, I tend to work to the back yardage of the greens with my G5, I have always tended to be short so this always works for me, nothing worse than going for the front or middle of the green and leaving an awkward chip, I'll take a long put back against that any day of the week.

I'm using it the other way and taking the front or middle yardage depending on pin position and making sure I taking enough club to get past that point. I'm going to try to change my focus from the pin to just hitting the green.

That can work for the individual if your more accurate but as I hear all the time, we as amateurs will more or less be short more often rather than long so working to the back works for me. If I get it sweet, I'm on the back of the green, if I'm short I'm in the middle, either way I'm putting ;)

I have a GPS and laser but with my game at the moment am seriously thinking of trying an Ordanance Survey map!

I will expect a quick reduction in handicap.
I will be watching with interest:D
