why isn't BLUE live as it has 4 letters and the letter L in it

Because for us non electrician types when wiring a plug, Blue = left (4 letters), Brown = right (5 letters) and the other one goes in the empty space😃

When I was 11 and doing me St John ambulance brigade badges towards me grand prior badge.
I was told BLue, bottom left and
BRown bottom right .
and the other goes 1 goes in the empty space.

it was about another eleven years before I actually tried it though and crossed me finger when turning on the socket.
