my parents were mad on golf,an so i had no opstion but to play.my old man play'd off 5 and my maw play'd to10.At the age of 15 i quit[i regret it now!]and only start'd again after inheriting my dads clubs,my mum still plays and im off in half an hour to play with her[age 66] myself[39]and my son[15] good days!we play at dunnikier park but living in fife, the home of golf is luckily ours, any one else got a story to tell or am i just being sentimental??

Not at all sentimental. How many games can you play with your mum and your son on equal terms? That's the beauty of the game.

My history:

Moved to Nairn from Glasgow when I was 13 and luckily 2 guys who joined the school the same day as I did happened to introduce me to the game. Having 2 Championship courses on your doorstep helps. Everyone in the town plays so we joined Nairn Dunbar Golf Club as juniors and I continued to play (quite well) until I started work as a lawyer in Edinburgh. Gave up my membership. Bad move.

Work commitments then meant a heartbreaking 15 years with an average of around 2 games a year, with the resulting drop in form and increase in scoring. Fortunately, at the grand old age of 35 I then saw the light, gave up law, started my own biz and joined Craigielaw Golf Club in East Lothian. Took lessons, practiced and began to love the game again after years in the doldrums.

Happily now play off single figures for the first time in my life and the best 5 scores I've made in the last 3 years are 72 or better, scores I used to only dream of. The game is more fun than ever now and I rejoined Nairn Dunbar as a Country Member. Visit regularly with my friends to show off the Nairn courses. Full circle!

And the best bit...my girlfriend doesn't play but is happy to caddy for me and lets me watch the golf on telly! Before you ask...no, you can't have her.

sounds similar to me john only thing is i was scoring better at 15 than now but the bug has bit hard again,my girlfriend is taking lessons havent decided if thats good or not, keep you posted!

great posts!

I got into golf in my early 20s (I'm pushing 40 very hard now) when I had to give up football with injuries

Started playing around the SW London area (Richmond Park and the dreaded 6 hr rounds) eventually joining Mill Ride in my late 20s when I knew this was game was for me. Regret not starting earlier not because I think I could have been a pro but just because when I hear about what fun junior golf was I wish I'd been involved

currently play my golf in Hampshire as I moved down to Basingstoke about three years ago

handicap is 9 but always trying to shave a shot or two off!

Great stories.

I started playing golf at the tender age of 13 I came up through the junior ranks of my club never getting below 18 handicap while a junior. I was 18 whenever it really took a grip of me I was soon playing of 8, My 1st year in senior competition's I won Golfer of the year at my club.I got my handicap down to 5. I played of 4-5-6 for the best part of 10years never could go below these handicaps. Last year I had a wonderfull year I won Golfer of the year again I'm the 1st ever person in my club to have lifeted this cup twice. All be it 20 years in between. My handicap is now 2. I didnt think I could of bettered last year, but I have already done so this year. I am now CLub Champion which I won 2 weeks a go with a score of 145 1 over par for my 2 rounds, winning by 3 clear shots. I put my recent form down to having a loving wife that lets me play golf whenever I want. She is talking about taking golf up but I'm against it as I wouldn't have anyone to drive me home after a few beers. My 2 son's play my eldest is junior captain this year so what a year for us. I would love to get down to 1 someday but my lowest handicap so far is 2.1. Golf is a great past time and everyone should have a go. apart from my wife of course.
