best weekend in a long time....

saturday i was invited to a organisers day at a local club. format for the day was brekkie at 8am followed by 9holes on there 2nd course followed by lunch and 18hole stableford team competition on their premier course.
we played as a 4ball with the best 2 scores combined counting as our entry.
not having an official handicap i played off 18 whilst my mate played off 22. we went round in 90 and 93 respectively scoring 35 and 38 points which placed us 4th overall.
we were delighted with this and had an awesome day, even though we played the par 5 18th hole in the dark!

we weren't far off winning and as soon as we can lose the odd 'disaster' hole (we both carded an 8 on a nasty par5) from our rounds we'll be sorted.

i am now almost convinced to signup for my first club membership :)

i've also got to add one thing... on the Par 3, 2nd hole we were on the tee and the group ahead of us called for us to take our tee shots before they putted....
something new to us.
well being novices 3 of our group proceeded to shank their shots into the lake to the near right of the hole.
the guys on the green were shaking there heads in disbelief.

fortunetly i saved the day by sticking a 5iron within 2 feet of the hole :)

Some courses have what is called "Call on holes" they are usualy par threes or very short par fours. there is usualy a notice board near the tee telling you this.

The idea behind it being that once you have hit your tee shots and walked to the green those on the green should have finished thus saving time.

We ahve 2 call on holes at our course. They provide easy passing places as the group who calls you on will usually then invite you to play through if you are quicker. One is a long par 3, the other a short par 4. Both holes have greens that can be hit off the tee but longish, hilly walks from tee to green so the idea is that the group ahead will clear the green before you reach it. Keeps the speed of play up.

Our 8th is a drivable 250 par 4, Once you reach the green you must mark you ball and wave the group behind on.

So annoying when you mark up, wait and watch all 4 drives fall 50 yards short, or they play an iron off the tee. :D
