I have to play off 18 instead of 24!

Our club has two match play trophies one is 18 max the other accepts all handicaps. When I put my name down I have put myself in the wrong draw. Rather than pull out they will let me play off 18.

Now I'm not to phased about this as I'm at that stage in golf where I can run together a few pars before taking an 8 or 9. My opponent is off 10 so I will get shots on 8 holes, with it being the 8 easiest holes these are the ones I often score well.

Anyone had a similar situation and triumphed?

yes, you will be able to play, but as the competition limts handicaps you must only play off an 18 handicap. you will receive the full difference between yourself and your opponent.

remember, play your own game, if your opponent is having a bad hole don't take any risks, don't oncede putts every time, now and again ask to see the ball down,

another thing in matchplay, ensure you follow the correct 'honour' on the tee. if your tear one down the middle out of turn it is within the other players right to ask it to be replayed.

you will get shots at stroke index 1-8, these are considered the hardest holes

Not necesarily.
If guidelines have been followed these could be fairly straightforward holes.
SI should be set to spread the shots around the course and difficulty should be way down the list of criteria used to work them out.
Although to be fair it seems a large number of clubs simply do allocate them on difficulty.
Which makes giving shots on diffcult holes difficult for the lower handicapper - generally they need a shot too....

Thanks for the tips.

I'm assuming honour on the tee is still dictated by strokes. Say we both go take a 5 and I win the hole as I have a stroke the honour would still remain as it was as the strokes were the same?

You could be right our stroke index 1 is a difficult hole but in my opinion our hardest hole is deemed stroke index 16.

You toss for the honour on the first tee. Then whoever wins the hole has the honour on the next tee. If the hole is halved then the person that had the honour on the previous hole keeps it.

Well after getting a lesson with my driver on Wednesday night I went and played my 1st matchplay tie on Thursday. My handicap was limited to 18 and my opponent was off 10 so I had 8 shots.

After two holes I was two up but my opponent pegged me back to AS and was still so until the 16th were he won two on the spin to win the match 2&1.

So I didn't disgrace myself and it was a great experience!

It is correct a popular misconception but not helped by many clubs ignoring congu recommendations only thing that seems to be adhered too regularly is odds/even numbers on same 9's.
We actually had 2 set of stroke index recently one for matchplay as per guidelines and another for stableford based on difficulty.

We played giving your opponent a good match, you'll be less wary next time.

Just go out and play your best and not worry about it.

When I am made to play off a reduced handicap I produce some of my best golf tbh.

I had to play for my clubs Scratch team the other week as they were short, managed to get a win which I was over the moon with.

Wish the club I played my 3rd round TT knockout last night adhered to the CONGU guidelines..........giving away 8 shots at a course I've not played before and 3 of them were on the 1st 3 holes!! :o

My oppo off 14 parred them all, as did I...3 down after 3.... . He then got 4 shots in a run of 5 holes on the back 9. Went on to lose 4&2.... I played 1 under handicap.....he played 3 under.....

Nice guy, but didn't offer to halve the green fee as is customary in these knockouts when courtesy of the course is not given..:(

Well done Jungle, good effort for your first match.
Don't be afraid to win, many high handicappers get into a winning position in matchplay but get overexcited when they see the winning post. Stay calm and say to yourself 'more of the same'.
