Tour Rookie
I was one of the lucky few who attended yesterday’s custom fit at AG
Firstly thanks to all at GM and AG for setting us up with this fabulous day
I got a call on Monday afternoon from PaulOH from GM asking if I could fill in at the last minute as somebody had to pull out.
Despite probably being the closest person to the venue I was last to arrive (late!!) due to a big crash on the M8 on the way. When I arrived the session was well underway.
When my time came I was asked what irons I would be interested in trying. I have not really been looking at clubs recently due to the expense of a new arrival in our household I was a bit unsure what to try so I kind of went with some of the models that have proven popular on here. I went for AP2, JPx800 Pro and I15. I was still looking for some forgiveness and felt these fitted the bill.
Started with the AP2 and it felt very good. Was hitting it around the 168 mark pretty solidly and was very impressed. Next Liam (the AG fitter) came up with the Wilson
FG Tour forged. Initially they did not fill me with too much confidence as I thought they were a little small and a bit thin on the top line for me but Liam showed me the club head size was very similar to the AP2, the AP2 appeared bigger as the face was taped. I took to them well and was hitting the 7 iron around the 154 mark (the same as my current R7’s that have stronger lofts). Next was the JPX 800 pro which felt a little cumbersome compared to the AP2 and FG Tour. Maybe I should have tried the MP53 instead. Really did not hit those very well at all, hitting most on the heavy side. Next was the I15 and these turned out to be a disaster. The dispersion was just about as far as the distance I was hitting them. I guess I must still just be too young for Ping. I honestly preferred the S56 I used for a warm up over the I15.
Liam advised me to try them all again but I had already discounted the I15 and JPX800 Pro. So it was down to the AP2 and FG Tour. Was still favouring the AP2 at this time. It was now that Liam commented on my ball striking was excellent for a 13 H/cap which made me feel good but the comments soon changed to “must have a poor (swear filter!!) short gameâ€
Was still hitting the AP2 6 iron around 168 but I also hit a few poor ones which were up to 20 yards shorter. Tried the FG Tour again and found that my off centre hits were only 5-6 yards shorter and the dispersion was tighter. Despite not asking to try the FG tour I was well happy with my choice.
My height measurements came up with me right on the line between ¼ inch short and Standard. Liam advised that as I was striking them well he didn’t feel the need to cut the ¼ inch off. This was exactly the same advice as my last AG fitting 5 years ago. The wrist to floor measurement indicated that we should go 1.5 degree upright and the impact tape showed this to be bang on with all 5 that I hit. My previous fitting showed the impact tape near centre so I was given STD lie at the time. Swing speed indicated that regular shaft was required and I preferred the slightly heavier DG R300 over the KBS shaft. I was given a choice of any grip and went for the GP multi compound as I have just re gripped my R7 with them.
Overall a fantastic day out and it was nice to meet some new guys and put some more faces to names on here and catch up with some familiar faces too.
